I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. This past spring I purchased three of MaryJane's towels, two in yellow and one in blue. I must say how awesome they are and still as fluffy and soft as when we bought them. They are the first towels we grab off the clean pile and oh how we love them! But, the blue has faded so much that it now looks like it has been bleached to almost white. I wash these towels all together and the yellow are still as pretty as the day they arrived and none of the other towels are bleached looking so I am just wondering if the blue dye fades easily or something? Has anyone else had this problem with the blue towels?

Hi Elizabeth,
The towels we've been using here in our b&b are the natural color so we haven't put the blue ones to the test yet. The ones I have at home are the green and I do the same (wash, use, wash, use) and they haven't faded.
Thanks for the heads up, I will check on it...I am thinking this may be the reason other brands use toxic dyes on their towels. I wonder why just the blue...I'll do some research. If anyone else is having this problem with the blue, please do let me know. Thanks Elizabeth!

Yes, I hope that others with the blue towels can say if they have had the same problem or not. I was just wondering if it was my own or not! I will be purchasing more in other colors (may try the green or natural this time!) but am curious about the blue.

I have the green and khaki and mo problems. Wonder why just the blue?
I have had this happen with other types of towels but not Mary Jane's.

I have the yellow and have washed them many, many times. No fading problems here. They just get softer and softer and softer.

I purchased the blue towels a while back so I went to take a look at them and sure enough there are some places where the blue has faded - not over the entire towel, but in spots. I am concerned that over time the whole towel will be faded.

Yes, that is how my blue towel started to fade. I noticed a small spot here and there and thought maybe I got some of my face cleaner on it that had peroxide in it. But then all of a sudden I noticed that the whole towel looks white. It is still soft and fluffy but no longer blue.

My daughter has washed her blue towels once, and they look okay so far. I will watch to see if they fade. She uses home-made laundry soap (Jenny's recipe).

Here is what we've learned from our production team and quality control
experts regarding our organic blue towels:

"All dyes, organic or conventional, in blue shades have a natural
characteristic that prevents the color to perform at the same length of time
as other color shades; even more so when the dyes are organic. Chemically
enhanced dies have a tendency to hold on longer, since the chemical is what
is holding down the hue. The same challenges exist with the color red."

We might stay away from the color blue for towels in the future rather than
resort to chemical dyes. We're a little bit blue about our attempt to be
green when it comes to organic towels!

Meg - That's too bad. I loved the color when it first arrived. Luckily, my next favorite is the yellow so will just continue to order that color!

Well, the color blue you chose was the most beautiful shade of robin's egg. I hope you keep it, because it is so pretty! Perhaps we could all find a way to clean them that would not make them fade? Anyway, I love the blue! And love you too!

I wonder if washing them with Blueing in the water would help?

I ordered my towels from Belk so I contacted their customer service. They are sending me a label to return the blue towels and are replacing them with another color.

If you ordered blue towels from us, we can do likewise. Write to lucas@maryjanesfarm.org

We will issue a call tag and have you ship back what you bought. We may have a problem getting you a color that you want as a replacement, however Lucas can discuss that with you.

Ours haven't faded but we don't use bleach here or harsh detergents. Any bleach using blue-towel owners out there that think that may be the reason for the fade or is it just an organic dye that won't hold?

Look for my new book, "MaryJane's Stitching Room," in bookstores now. Coming next in 2008: "MaryJane's Outpost Guidebook - for Cultivating Your Inner Wild."
