I am still trying to figure out how to finance my dream and different business ideas. I am currently teaching music 1 day a week at the local catholic school. I loved it until I wanted to do a Christmas concert and the principal said do you really want to do one....UH HELLO YES! So she talked me out of doing one, and to me that is HORRIBLE. I want to give lessons on my own and build my own studio. There are a few other people in town that give lessons but I am the most qualified, aka educated and my students I have really really do well and progress quickly along with no pressure but instead with fun.

Well, Bridget, why not take the flyering route? Is there a place in town that alot of people will go to (supermarket, laundrymat, community college, etc) where they will let you put up a flyer? You could make up a small blurb about yourself on it, list some credentials, and go? You could also place an ad in the local "Penny Pincher" though I'm not sure how much ads might cost...
What sort of music do you teach? Or is this music theory? Obviously, the only problem is the child's needing instruments.
Another idea, if you are really game, is to try to teach in local elementary schools, etc, depending on your level of education. Certain areas really need music teachers, even as after school programs so maybe you want to approach them?
Just my two cents....

My son is a musician/songwriter/producer. He also has about 5 years teaching experience. He was homeschooled, and recently "retired" from his job with a national Christian band. When he decided to teach again he had flyers made up that target each specific group. Homeschoolers, church youth groups, and lastly other professionals. I advised him to play up EVERYTHING he has to offer.
It sounds like you have a lot to offer students as well! If you teach theory-and I'm guessing you do, that's a huge bonus. Parents love that, don't we? With your education, experience and attitude I would think folks would be thrilled to have you as a teacher!
Another thought...my son recently approached a local music store owner about renting a small studio space to teach in. The shop owner was very enthusiastic & promised to set something up after the holidays. You might go that route if there is a shop nearby.
My kids took their lessons in the home of their teacher. We drove 30 minutes each way to get there, once a week. We always provided our own instruments. If you do have kids in your home you MUST be careful that there is always another person present (preferably their parent). All my years as a teacher and BSA leader taught me to be very aware of youth protection issues. Just a thought.
