What type of water bath canning equip would you recommend? Our local K-mart is going out of business and they had a canning pot with rack for $15.00. Is that a good price? Do you think it would be good quality?

My XMIL said I could have all her canning equip, but it has not materailized yet, so I was thinking of doing for myself.

Thanks All.

Usually water bath canners arn't very expensive and as long as it has a lid and is tall enough to be 2" above the tallest jars you will be canning (quarts usually) it will work great. You can even use a big stock pot in a pinch..but those racks are nice. I replace my water bath canners now and then and as long as they arn't chipped..have a rack and lid and are tall enough they will be great!! Have fun!!! I hope your XMIL ends up giving you hers too! Maybe you will score a pressure canner..THEY cost more!

Thanks for the info Jenny.

I have to go that way later in the week and I think I'll buy myself a Christmas gift. If XMIL gives me hers I'll have a spare. I too am hoping for the the pressure cooker - I priced some on line and ouch they are expensive.

Stay safe and warm. I've been hearing about the wacky weather some of our girls are having.

$15 is a steal! You have to get it! You should also look for canning jars while you're there- I got 5 cases for $24 a while back at a Kmart by my sister's house.

HEY! Great find on the jars.

Interesting how the price of these jumps all over too.

I have 2 water bath canners. One I use to sterilize the jars, the other gets used for berry pulp or anything thing else destined for the compost while I'm in the canning process.

For the pressure canners....with proper care, they should last a lifetime.

They (the pressure canners) are expensive, but like Anna said..they last a lifetime. I have had mine for over 20 years..it has more than paid for itself!!
