Hi all, I found out something interesting today, but not sure how knowing this, will change your lives any!!
In new zealand when we flush our toilets, the water in the bowl spins out from clockwise. Now in america it spins out anticlockwise. Something to do with the pull of the planet thing. (sorry not too sure on the technical info)
Anyone else have any useless information?? |

Hi Helen, It's a northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere thing. Spins opposite of one another. Gravational pull and all that jazz. One of nature's mysteries!

And I love the different ways people speaking the same language say things: anticlockwise vs. counter-clockwise (American). I find it fascinating and try to keep a mental note of some of the differences. Car park vs. parking lot; car boot sale vs. garage sale; bonnet vs. hood; jumper vs. sweater; caravan vs. motorhome or trailer . . . :-) I guess that qualifies as useless information . . . or maybe not . . . Well Helen, to compilicate matters, the US has both police and sheriff officers. Police officers are for cities. Sheriff officers are for outlying and more rural areas. This is fun to compare language, isn't it?

Clare, my hubby appreciates your very correct police vs. sheriff answer ( he is a sheriff). He must explain that 10 times a week!
The language thing that always gets me, is people in the UK say "He went to Hospital" or "I'm going to University in the fall" where we would say going TO the hospital or going to the University. My sister in law is from England and we love the little differences! |

When I lived just north of Houston we had city police, the county constable, State Patrol, and, of course, the Texas Rangers (I'm not talking about a sports team here).

Howdy, In Tyler,TX we have Rangers, police, a sheriff, and deputies. That doesn't take into account all of the feds!!! My husband is a criminal defense attorney and it does get confusing!! |

Here in my county we have Sheriff Mounted patrol. They ride horses and actually use them to do search and rescue and look for escaped convicts on the prairie.

                      Boob envy, maybe?
I know that a horse physically is unable to throw up. Their soft palate is hinged in only one direction...hence the problem of colic.
I know that cows have four stomachs, and are physically able to swallow food, and then belch it back up again for further chewing. This in itself is not remarkable, at least on a farmgirl board...what is remarkable is that I know that my husband can do precisely the same thing with dairy products, specifically milkshakes. Yes, it is revolting, especially when he informs you that "it's still cold".

Men have nipples because we all start out as females. By the time the hormone to develop boy parts start rushing through the body, the nipples are already there.

How funny, Heather! One of those things you think you would rather not know and then it makes you laugh anyway. About the police and what-else-shamacallit thing: here in rural TX there are so many different "versions" of it and they seem to be driving about so much that I'm sometimes surprised there is still room for other vehicles on the roads! My tidbit of "useless"(?) information: the biggest and most powerfull muscle in the human body?? A pregnant woman's uterus!

Heather, does he do childrens' parties? I'm sure little boys would be very impressed with this special talent.
On the subject of our amazing bodies, did you know that the spine of a human female is at least twice as strong as a man's or that women natually have the ability to stand on one foot while men have to learn it - and some never manage as displayed in my last yoga class.

Okay- here's something that I heard a few years ago that I've never been able to get out of my head-
  don't ask why- I don't know!
  : A Twit is a pregnant goldfish!
Okay, now I know it's a silly fact. But, next time you think that someone is acting like a twit- you'll get this funny picture of them swimming in a fish bowl with a baby belly!

Here is another useless fact about police...they are called Cops here because the badges they wore at the turn of the century were made out of COPper.

Too funny reading all these useless (but interesting!) facts! I heard it said that a "duck can't walk without quacking"....anyone know for a fact if this is true? Not being one to have a pond or ducks here at home I'm curious! LOL Ü
