I remember when I was younger, my parents made some yard decorations one year. They cut candy cane shapes and gingerbread people shapes (woman had a skirt, man was man shaped) from plain cardboard. They then affixed a simple wooden yard stake to the back of the card board. My mom then took paint and decorated the cardboard. It was so easy to stake out the decorations and they didn't cost an arm and a leg. We also had Christmas lights out which added a great glow.

I hope your mom didn't decorate with PAIN! (I think you mean paint.) Sorry, coudn't resist!
I do love homemade Christmas decorations. So nostalgic and sweet.

I've got the old fashioned big bulb lights that I'm going to put up this week before the snow gets too deep and I'm thinking of making some bird goodies for the trees. Alee, I love that kind of thing! I've been thinking of seeing if I can scavenge some construction plywood and cutout/paint some winter decorations for the yard and driveway

I take the cages for the tomatoe plants, turn the upside down. I use cheap tent stakes to secure them (SD is very windy)to the ground. Then wrap with lights. They look like mini christmas trees. I border my side walk with them. And they get used year round.

Don't forget to decorate window boxes-(homemade ornaments on sticks w/lights), doors-(wreaths), front porch-(balls hanging from Ribbons).
When we lived it Hawaii-they put up plywood christmas cards they painted themselves. Very sharp! They were 6 foot tall!
I will make one for next year! I had almost forgotten it.

Alee, didn't the cardboard get soggy and sag from the snow? I love the idea. I've always wanted to make a nativity scene but always figured I'd have to buy the wood (expensive) to make the figures.
Aimee, I love your tomato cage idea! I'm going to use that one this year.
I used to cover my front door with wrapping paper and put wide ribbon and a big bow on it to make it look like a Christmas gift. Now my front door is French doors and I hate to block the light, so I just hang wreaths on them now.
I have a wrap-around porch and the posts used to be white and I'd wrap red ribbon around them like candy canes. Now they are burgundy, so I'll use white ribbon this year. Then I make a swag for each post out of pine boughs, ribbon and pine cones. The Forest Service charges $20 to go out and cut pine branches but, considering I have 12 posts, that is still cheaper than buying them pre-made. Some day, I'll buy a cheap fake tree and just use the boughs from it.
I'd love to see more ideas here.

Myu husband and I just made the word "NOEL" out of our old canopy legs. I sprayed them white after he soldered the letters, and we puyt lights on them. It looks so pretty on the lawn! We also have 12 lit up arches that are made out of pvc pipe. Two go across the road and 10 are lining my front yard. We have made croses, candles, and other things too. It's so much better when the decorations are home made!

If I remember correctly the cardboard basically hovered over the snow because of how they affixed it to the stake and I think by the time they put it out, it was so cold, the snow didn't melt.
