I know tonight while I was milking my hands were just freezing!!! a couple of those in my pockets would have been appreciated alot this time of year...it was down to 5 degrees last night...and feels like it will be just as cold tonight...brrrrr. And for my friend Pattie in Calif..who is always cold..even in summer.

I have looked in vain for reasonably priced pie weights...those little suckers are expensive! Anyway...I hate the way corn or rice smells after a couple of trips to the microwave - Maybe Beans? I have used flax seed but it doesnt stay warm long. Any suggestions?

I bet beans would work. I agree about the smell of rice. I used flaxseed in my herbal pillows and it stays warm in those for quite a while but probably wouldn't work well in something small. How big are the pie weights? Would marbles work?

Found this link -- these aren't too bad. Except it's only 3/4 of a cup and you have to use 1/2 cup for each warmer.

Can't wait to hear about the marble test! I've been pondering what to use in the hand warmers all day.

Hey Kay,
I got a bit side tracked last night but will do the test today. I will do them at 30 second intervals and see how long they stay hot. I will also do my pie weights at the same time AND some dried beans which I fear will stink after a while as with any botanical. But I will report soon.

How about little square ceramic tiles from a floor tiling store, some mis-match out of date stuff that
they are getting rid of? If they are put into a pouch, why couldn't such tiles be broken into pieces
and used in the warmer - no? If rough edges bother one, they could be filed
on rough concrete or with a file.

Okay...minute and 30 seconds and they were hot. I just wrapped them in a dish towel for the test. I am waiting to see how long they stay warm. Be back

not long at all. Maybe 5 minutes.
I was a little afraid to heat them longer because you know some glass will break in a microwave (ask me how I know!)So I think we might do better to stick to rice or beans and throw them away when they get stinky. However if I ever find the pie weights wholesale I will see about getting us all some!

Darn, I was hoping the marbles would work better, as these are on my Christmas "to-make" list also. I was afraid of having them break, so I was waiting for the results of your experiment . Oh well, back to looking for ceramic pie weights.....

You know, I was wondering about the glass marbles breaking. DARN! Beans or rice would be good. Maybe throw some lavender buds in with them -- warmth and aromatherapy.

I've recently read something like field corn would work (not sure if that's the name... you can get it at the feed and seed...anyone?). I've also used cherry pits (ordered them online)- they work well but aren't easily accessible or inexpensive.

What about smooth stones....smaller versions of the ones used in hot stone massages. It snowed here last night and right now anything warm sounds good!

pea gravel!!! You are a genius Kathy!!! Pea gravel is cheap (or free) and easily accessible. Good thinking!! I will see what I can come up with and give it a test!

Susan - you crack me up! I can just see you running around collecting all these things to test in your microwave! Pea gravel is an excellent idea as are the small smooth stones.

Yeah, I might be taking up a collection to get a new microwave if I keep it up!!! Will be back later with a report on the pea gravel. Dont laugh...I had to wash it and let it dry...it came out of my yard!
