Hello,
I might have a lead on ceramic beads. My DH has a motorcycle shop and does bead blasting. I called his supplier for blasting materials and he will be calling me back regarding price on a 50 pound bag. Yep the smallest bag he sells but may be cheaper in the long run with left overs to trade or sell off. The pie weights I saw were explained to be pea sized but I think smaller could work also. So anyone have an idea on size using millimeters for measurement? You could use these also to make those shoulder heat bags, foot warmers, the ideas are limitless. I'll post what he has to say tomorrow.

Pea gravel? WONDERFUL, I have access to unlimited amounts for free at my hubbys work. The lant is closed until spring when work picks up but I am sure I could get some. I can give these to my fellow football moms at the banquet in two weeks. Perfect for sitting outside at a football game or watching a hockey game! Ooh- can you say fundraiser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (jumping up and down in my office chair!!!)

Okay, one dish cloth UP IN FLAMES in my microwave. Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration...it was just black...no flames as I tossed it in the sink. So...I will try different fabric. It was only in there one minute too!!! So never put terry cloth wrapped pea gravel in a microwave...k????

| Try putting a glass of water with the handwarmer(not in the water). I've read anytime you microwave something dry you need to put a glass of water with it. Good Luck JoAnn |

Susan -- I'm sorry but I'm absolutely dying laughing here! Suppose the pea gravel got too hot??
I put my herbal heat packs in the microwave all the time and never have a problem. They're filled with rice or flax.
Betty Jo - if you could get the beads we could all buy some from you.
I'm supposed to be getting ready for a bazaar on Saturday and, instead, I keep coming here to find out how the latest experiment turned out.

well i'm sort of jumping in here, and i skipped page 2 and 3. i will say that flax works great in my micro. i use it in my "special" eye pillows, and it doesn't stink or get yucky. also very cheap if you buy in bulk from like a co-op. are you looking for the pie marbles? betty crocker catalog has some, i don't know about $$$$ though, can't be more an a new micro....

Bummer on the pea gravel!!!! I too keep checking to see how the latest experiment is going, lots more fun than anything I should be getting done. LOL Betty Jo count me in if you can get them from your husbands supplier.

HAHA! But what fun it has been trying things! I too would love some pie weights if they become available. In the meantime I think I will stick to flax seeds myself.

Hello,
Guy never called back today. He might of thought I was nuts when I told him what I was going to use them for. I will call Saturday and Monday to find out more. I'm really interested as my son is bringing his girl friend home for Christmas. She lives in CA. We live in WI. She's going to freeze.  I think I will make her a muff with pockets to put the warmers in to.

I am in contact with two companies that sell the ceramic beads and will post in the next day what they say. I think, they think I'm nuts, when I tell them the story of why I want the beads. Hand warmers made out of old felted wool sweaters? What's a felted sweater? You shrink wool sweaters, make them into bags and fill them with beads that you microwave, to warm your hands? OK lady any thing you say. All in the name of warm hands!!!!!!!! 10 inches of snow and ice Saturday and 4 more on the way. Winter has hit Wisconsin.

note to self..do not let the kids know about the effects of pea gravel in a microwave..file away this information in the "kids shall not know how to burn up the microwave file" and toss away the key..LOL (just funning with ya Susan) LOL

Well spoke with one company today. They have what we need but the min. order is 20 metric tons. How many beads do you ladies want? Thanked him politely and told him I could really only use 50-100 pounds. Maybe we'll get lucky and he will send us a small sample. One more company to go and then I think we will all be using flax seed.  Will talk to the other company today. Will post this evening.

I am thinking of going with the flax seed unless you can find the beads somehow. I do like the fleece too, I had thought to use it. I want to make them for hockey games and sell some to parents etc. (hockey only costs a small fortune!ugh =o[ ) Does anyone know how long to microwave them and how long they stay hot?

Sorry Ladies No ceramic beads. The second company has them but the are very small .8mm and $3.55 a pound and min. order is 55lbs. That does not include shipping from Ohio to WI. SO Flax seeds it is. But how long do you micro and do you have to do anything to the seeds before you fill the bags.

Hello,
I've been trying to resolve a problem where my hand warmers are catching on fire. I used the pattern from Martha Stewart's website (now conspicuously missing) for pie weights in cashmere. The cashmere is not synthetic but I'm wondering if the thread on them is the problem as it is a blend. Has anyone else had this happen? Would adding a cup of water to the microwave help? I tried contacting the staff at Martha Stewart but they have been less than helpful (transcript is on my blog). I bought my pie weights on eBay, BTWj, and found some at World Market, too. Thank you! I know it. I'm thinking it could be the thread I used as it is cotton/poly blend but I'm pretty irritated at the people at Martha Stewart for not helping me on this one.
