I know it's still relatively early to be thinking about this (but we in England don't really go in for Halloween in a big way, and we don't have Thanksgiving, so Christmas is all beginning now), but I was wondering if any of you ladies know where I might find giant gingerbread men christmas ornaments to hang on a christmas tree? I'm actually looking for a store in the US that sells them (so that I can get them shipped to my husband....he's in the US, and I've been in the UK since our wedding waiting for my greencard).
I know I should make them really, but I don't think the size I'm after would fit in my oven, and I'd like to use them year after year without having to bake them each time.
Anyone have any ideas of stores?

Nin,
If you want a way to make the ornaments easily, have them last year after year, and have something that makes the house smell great, you can make the gingerbread men out of applesauce "dough". You make it with applesauce(buy something cheap at the grocery store, since you don't eat these), cinnamon and white glue (I think...) I'll check with mom for the exact recipe and post it soon. After combining ingredients the dough can be rolled out and you can use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, like the gingerbread men. You dry it in the oven (like salt dough), and when they're done they're hard and very durable. Plus they smell fantastic- very "holiday-ish"! When dry they can be decorated or left plain, and if you punch a hole in the top before drying, they can be hung as ornaments.

What I would do is make them from polymer clay. Bake them and coat them , don't forget to put the haner in them before you bake. You will only need brown, alot of white, black, red, and green. Use a cookie cutter . Inever seen giant gingerbread man , only about 6 inches tall.

Okay, here's the recipe:
1 1/2 cup ground cinnamon (you can use all cinnamon, or you can add 1 teaspoon cloves and 1 teaspoon nutmeg to the cinnamon)
1 cup applesauce (smooth, not chunky)
1/3 cup white school glue (in the U.S. it's Elmers-not sure what it is in the U.K)
mix together; let it sit for 30 minutes. Roll it out (either on wax paper, or you can use a little cinnamon to "flour" your hands, the rolling pin, etc.)and cut out your shapes. Set them on a cooling rack to dry- not in the oven, like I thought. They have to dry for 4-5 days; they'll be hard when dry. They're not edible!

Wow, that applesauce dough sounds perfect for the size that I'm after! and cheap too...I would need so much polymer clay, but that'd be great for smaller ornaments.
thanks for the recipe farmgirlwannabe! yes, we have white school glue here too- I can see the bottle in my head, but can't recall the name of it, but we definitely have it.

Consider it an even trade-I checked out your blog, and I'll be making the apple spice "loser" cake very soon (and now I'm on the hunt for her Mary Berry's cookbooks, eventhough I live in California and am doomed to have inferior cake.....)

lol! thanks for looking. you know I really don't know what it is about the cakes that I back in California- it MUST be the flour or something. I've noticed that bread tastes different too. The cake will still taste lovely, but it might just taste different from a british-made cake if that makes sense!
And Mary Berry cookbooks are GREAT if you can get your hands on one, her recipes are failsafe! I've seen that she has a US version that's co-authored by someone else, which suggests that they've tweaked the recipes a bit to make them work for US ingredients.

Just a note on the Cinnamon dough. Cinnamon can get quite expensive especially if you need large quantities. I work at a school and was able to order a 5 pound container of cinamon through the cafeteria for 15$!!!! Check with your local school and they may be able to order some for you!
