Hi! I have an apron started and embroidered by my great grandmother and I'd love to be able to wear it. The trouble is, I'm not sure how to finish it because I can't figure out how it fastens. Please take a look and tell me if you've got any ideas.

It has VERY long straps that go over the shoulder. But they're not long enough to tie around the waste if that were an option. They are long enough to reach the corners of the apron so maybe a button on the corners and button holes on the straps? Or does it need another set of ties at the waste coming from the corners? Thanks for any help you can offer!

I would say you need to add a button at the corner of the skirt of the apron and make button holes on the straps and then criss cross the neck ties. I think it is supposed to criss cross so you don't need side straps.

That is exactly what I would do, too. Criss cross the straps on your back (*making an X) and then put button holes on the underarm spots where they should connect and buttons on the straps where they fit best (or the other way around)
It is so pretty!! Let us see it for sure when you are done!! What a neat thing to be able to have to finish!!!

Just as another option since the ties look rather long. You could make button holes on each corner of the skirt and thread the straps through and tie them.
Very pretty apron by the way.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies! I think I like the idea of buttons, now I just have to keep my eye out for some nice-sized vintage ones. Another thought I had, what if both the button and hole are on the strap and after your cross them in the back, you thread them through a slit in the apron and double it back on itself to button it? That way there's not any strap hanging down? But then that's just more holes I have to make in this lovely old apron.

Jenna, I have a pattern that has loops attached...made about 3 inches long (before seam) and inch wide (before seam). The loops are to thread straps thru after crossing and then tie.
These would keep ya from putting holes or buttons on.
If you don't want to sew them then just put ribbon on for loops! Easy.
Good luck with it and show us a pic of you wearing it after you are done.

This is one of two aprons I have from my great grandma on my mom's side. I will have to post a picture tonight the other one! One handy tip for anyone with heirloom linens is to create a tag using acid-free scrapbooking paper including the name of the original owner, their birth and death dates and any other fun facts. Discretely attached it by either pinning or sewing inside the pocket. Or, if you're more ambitious than I, you could embroider the information on a small fabric swatch and attach that to make it more user friendly. I just take my tags out when washing. I'm terrible with names and dates so without my tags, I would be at a loss as to who created each item!

Jenna,
That IS a lovely apron! I like yarnmamma's idea of the loops. Cross the straps in back, thread through the loops and tie in back. This would keep the apron close to the body, not flopping out in front. It all depends on how the apron fits you. Pin it on both ways and see how the fit is before you start snippin' and stitchin'!
