Hi everyone. I read about Mary Jane's farm in Country Home magazine and immediately got on her website. My husband and I spent our entire lives in a large city, but I always wanted a farm. So, when he retired in May, 2003, we moved to a 35 acre farm in rural southwest Virginia. We rescue animals and have cats, goats, sheep and a donkey. I have learned a lot (the hard way) about farm life. But, now I can say, I'm a bona fide farmgirl. My husband prefers city life so I tell everyone he is a farmer's husband. My veggie garden improves each year...I'm going natural all the way. I actually have a pumpkin patch. Our city friends thought we had completely lost our minds....the nearest bank is 18 miles one way and the nearest grocery store is 16 miles one way, but this is the best physical move I've ever made. I'm looking forward to communicating with other farmgirls.

Hi Mary Jane!! Welcome to the group!!! I am having good luck with my little pumpkin patch this year so far too...I am trying to stay a step ahead of the squash bugs..but the plants look huge and there are lots of small pumpkins now!
I wish I were that far from a bank and store..my husband wouldn't think that was so great either I am afraid!! Lucky you, though!!!

Hi Randi,

Actually, I tried in vain to grow pumpkins. Then last fall I put pumpkins, bales of straw, etc. near my gate. When the pumpkins started to rot, I threw them in a field thinking they would grow in the spring. They didn't, but I had two plants grow where they had been sitting. Now, I have a hugh patch. It was sheer luck.

Hi Carla,

I have a sweatshirt that has Barn Babe on it and there is one with Barn Goddess as well. Wish I could take credit for thinking it up.

Hi Jenny, Actually I would like to be more remote, but this is as far as I could get my husband from the city.
