Hi ladies!
If you don't mind dying sheets for your rag rugs, call up local hotels and ask to speak with the housekeeping department. Ask the head housekeeper if you could come and get any worn out or stained sheets for craft purposes. I get TONS (literally) of sheets from a nice hotel here in town. In fact- I can often get the "permanent" stains out with a little effort and then re use the sheets! Sometimes the time and effort it would take just isn't wortht the effort to the housekeepers.
But I digress-
Usually these sheets are just donated or THROWN AWAY!!! anyways. So it is worth a try.

Great Idea! Wow....and if the stains will not come out, you could throw away those pieces and still get lots of strips of material.

Of course you can share this information with anyone! I think it is much better to put all that fabric to a good use rather than have it be tossed.

What an awesome idea about these sheets! I'm going to have to go to my little local motel and ask them about their old sheets, too.
I have another idea for the sheets. I have a girl that is teaching a craft class here at the Angel Loft and she make the neatest thing out of scrap material and Fancy Fur yarn. She calls it "Knot Knit Scarves." The Fancy Fur Yarn has two different strands in it - an eyelash strand of yarn and a multi-colored ball type yarn. Once you have dyed your sheets whatever color suits your fancy, get some similar colored Fancy Fur. Cut the sheets into strips 1" - 1½" wide by 6" - 7" long. You separate the Fancy Fur strands (eyelash and ball yarn) from each other so that you have them in two different separate strands from each other. You cut the yarn several inches longer than you would like your "scarf" to be. Then tying the end of the sheet strips into knots around the eyelash yarn and the ball yarn together alternately down the length of your yarn strands and in no special pattern, you end up with a scarf-like accessory. I will take a picture of the one she made for me and maybe I can use my little digital camera's video feature and make a quick video of her tying the strips around the yarn strands. She is going to teach a class in the Knot Knit Scarves here. I just LOVE them. They are SOOOO colorful and they add so much to any outfit.
Anyway, it just hit me that you might be able to use the sheets, once dyed, for this project. I know my description isn't so hot, but it's the best I could figure out how to tell you how she does it. I've never actually watched her do it from scratch. I just have one of the scarves and she briefly told me how she separates the Fancy Fur and ties the strips around the yarn strands. She leaves little strands of the eyelash yarns and the ball yarn hanging off the scarf as well. I'll just take a picture so you can see it.
A comment from our forum, from Peg, on how to use the sheets. I will send a picture as soon as she posts it..

We also use pillow cases (for anyone who want to donate new or used ones "white or light colored ones are best") we use the pillow cases to turn them into night bags or cute bags to put emergent items into (i.e. lotions,diapers,shampoo) to give to children taken out of abuse situations. We also use them to give children in any emergent situations (i.e. car accidents, fires) we call them Special Kids Bags. We put our charities logo on it. Fold top and sew leaving it where you can put a draw string through it. Fill it with items and donate them free to these children. So if you are ever interested in donating please let us know!!!
