oh my gosh gurlz .. our local little library is selling LOTS of their books .. i SWEAR .. i toted two CARTS full to my car! They were mostly fifty cents. Friend Mimi, picked up a book with a doll on the cover and asked if i had seen it. I 'sheepishly' said .. 'oh no, i missed that one .. i do have a copy .. are you going to get it?'

she replied: 'no .. i thought you might be interested in it' ..

WELL honies .. i'm here to tell you .. i 'bout ripped the fingers off her hand grabbing it .. THEN .. annouced to her that it is AT LEAST and $50.00 book!

i took it home and 'amazoned' it .. and found copies (used) from $20. to $100!!!!

went back to the library today to tell the Chief Librarian that they are GIVE AWAY some very valuable books .. told her about my WENDY LAVIT .. book .. and told her that i would try to sell it and donate the money to the library. (ONLY after i find my OTHER COPY!!) it is a highly prized 'primitive doll' book that is out of print!

I told her that i would be happy to look at some of the books they are giving away and research their value for them. She thanked me but said .. these books had not been checked out in over 3 years .. and they are 'automating' .. (to which i personally was very sad .. because it warmed my heart when i first moved here and took some books out and had to sign those little 'library cards' that slip into pockets of the cover of the book!!! sooooooo nostalgic! BUT .. 'progress' such as it is .. they are automating and she said it costs almost a dollar per book to put them into the system .. and they HAD to clear them out and make room! She told me to take another look cuz' they had put some more out for sale! I saw (and GRABBED) a Wallace Nutting Furniture book that i KNOW went for over a hundred dollars at one time. (gonna' amazon it to see what is going for now). told her i also had that one and would try to sell it for them .. AGAIN .. AFTER i find my copy! (Actually, i might gift it to friend MIMI (who almost lost her fingers the night before! .. because she and her husband are restoring an historic olde INN to become a 'lodge' and 'restaurant' in our little town .. and she was looking for 'early furniture' books!

sale is still going on! i'm gonna' stop by there tomorrow and let maryjane and family check it out too!

whoooopeeee! don't you jus' love a 'bargain'!!! xo, frannie

I love going to library sales! Some of my favorite books growing up were from library sales!

I love rummage sales with lots of books, especially when it's "all you can fit in a bag for $x" day. I feel like I'm at one of those huge buffet restaurants, only I'm not giving myself heart disease. I save up all my impulse buying for these events and only get books I absolutely know I want from real book stores.

I just read an article in my local paper about a charity sale coming up this weekend. Among the things donated they found a first edition of Frederick Douglass' autobiography (published in 1855). This is a pretty big charity (Ronald McDonald house) so they have volunteers specially trained to watch out for things like that. They're expecting to get $500 for this book.

our library has book sales 3 times a year (next one in Nov) It was great to give DD a few bucks and let her pick from the childrens section. we have made a little outing of it now. i especially love the next day when every book is 10 cents and a certain time.

my best find has been the Victory Garden Companion which retailed for over $100 and I got it for $1.00. most of my garden and simple living books have come from these sales.

definetly worth standing in line for.

Good goin Frannie - I have a used book business and it is a great money-maker. Most of my books were either roadside treasure or thrift shop bargins.
Harry Truman's Memoirs - two volumes my husband bought at a thrift shop for 20 cents each. One was signed by Harry Truman and I sold it on Ebay for over $300 - not a bad profit.
I love my books, but it is hard not to want to hoard em hehehe Children's books are especially valuable. Sometimes though it is just an odd title that sells a book. My very first used book sale was of a book called Daddy was an Undertaker - go figure!
