I don't know many of the old timey weather predictors, but I have heard about the colors of wooly worms predicting the upcoming winter....dark ones meaning bad weather and red meaning mild. So my question is this...what about a white one? I saw one the other day and was stumped. White-out blizzards?? How fun ! Anyone know?

Friends,
Toni

I don't know about colors, but I have heard that the more wooly they are the harder the winter is supposed to be.

I only know about the wooly caterpillar---the rusty brown and black one. And the more black the harder the winter. Who knows. MB

Here is a picture of a Wooly Bear Caterpillar. It is almost all black with just a band around the middle of rust color. He has raindrops on his hairs because it is always raining here. Sometimes they are half and half but all dark means a cold winter. We shall see.

ok, I have to laugh, I thought a "wooly weather watcher" was a piece of yarn attached to a sign that read:
If it's wet - it's raining
If it's moving/blowing - it's windy
If it's white - it's snowing
If stiff - it's freezing
If missing/gone - it's been stolen!
ok, ok, so maybe I have taken to much cold meds
! LOL!

hahahahaha!! Grace that's so funny! I like that idea! We always looked at the Wooly Bears banding. If the black band was wide, then it would be cold. If it was skinny, warm. I wonder if the white one was a saddleback caterpillar? Evil things, they are. The sting will give you a large itchy bump! I haven't seen a Wooly Bear yet. I hope we have a cold winter here. The bugs need to die!!!

He was out in the grass on the way to the barn. They are always out this time of the year but I never see any other kind. MB

The funny thing is, about 20 years ago on a trip to Seattle, WA. & Vancouver Canada, I found the little sign w/the piece of wool on it, "The Wooly Weather Watcher" in a cute little shop, go figure, I still have it and now I live in Spokane, WA. too funny. I guess it was ment to be, & now I can frame & hang it, just in case I need to know what the weather is like that day!!! lol!
