Brand spanking new Jersey bull calf this morning. I guess we don't have to worry about beef in 2009.

Congrats!! How fun..I just love those sweet little Jersey faces..and the milk!! Still havn't caught Mona's heat..we are looking at a July baby next year now..darn.

Vet just left. Went out this morning & Dolly was down and glassy eyed. Vet did a calcium IV and she's back on her feet.
This was our first experience of milk fever in the 5 years with Dolly. She's really putting out the milk this year. Her udder looks more like a Holstein than a Jersey.

Yes, he'll be our beef steer for 2009. Until then, he'll be loved on and probably trained to light draft work.
We have a young unrelated Jersey bull that we'll breed Dolly back to. We're hoping for a heifer next time so we can retire Dolly.

Oh poor dolly.. I am glad to hear she is okay now. I worried so much about milk fever this year with Mona since she is high producer for her size too..but no worries. I will be ready every year since I am such a worrier when it comes to my cow friend.
That is an adorble little bull calf!! How fun! Does he have a name yet?

We gave dolly a tube of CPMK Saturday - but it didn't help this time.
She's given about 6 gallons of milk when she first freshens and tapers off to about 4 gallons a day. This is grass/hay fed only - no grain.
She was so engorged yesterday, we milked a little a couple of times during the day just to relieve the pressure. We have 4.5 gallons of colostrum in the freezer now and her udders were still real full after we milked.
That should have been a clue to us. She's never been this full of milk before. Doc says it's because of her age (she's 9 this year). We'll probably milk her for another few years. Hopefully next year's calf will be a heifer.

poor thing! I didn't realize she was that old! It would be so cool if she does have a heifer calf next year.
Mona was over 8 gallons a day at first this year..yikes!! She is down to only 4 and 1/2 a day on once a day milking now though..much more manageable!! She does get grain though..I don't have pasture and I am not sure the hay I get has everything she needs. And I am trying to keep weight on her.
Hey..how long do you keep colostrum frozen? I saved several gallons from this year for if I need it next time, but have a gallon from the spring before..should I chuck it?? I hate to throw stuff like that out just in case..but that may be pushing it.

We keep it for a year (or until next time she calves). I don't throw it out, I'll divide it up between the rest of tghe animals.

Dolly is fine this morning.
Doc said not to milk her last night, so we didn't. The calf got his breakfast and Paul milked her out this morning. Filled the belly surger to the top (4 gallons) and Paul had to finish by hand.
The 6 weaner pigs got the milk this morning.
Miss Piggie and her piglets were let out in the pasture yesterday. Guess they were bouncing and rooting all over theh place!
wish my camera didn't die.

Just read this post again, too bad about the milk fever. An old timers preventive thing was to give the cow back any milk that she would drink on that first milking. Don't know if it worked or not, but just a thought. My vet had mentioned one time that Jerseys get milk fever more then other breeds ? Over the years we had noticed it ran in cow family's too. At least they get over it fairly quickly. Hopefully!!

Michele,
This is the first instance of milk fever in Dolly in the 5 years we've had her. We give her a tube of CPMK about a week before we believe she is due to calve (and once a week until she does, in case we miscalculated her due date). When she does calve, we give her another tube of CPMK.
It's the same concept as giving her back the colostrum loaded milk. Getting plenty of calcium and other minerals into her.
The vet said it's due to her age (8 or 9) and milking ability. We'll have to watch her more closely whenever she calves from now on.
