Such a sad week this week. My German shepherd June had become quite sick and spent last weekend in the animal hospital. I had a bad feeling something terrible was wrong and after being transferred from hospital to my regular vet (who sent her home)I took her for an abdominal ultrasound to find out she had multiple cancers. I chose to put her to sleep. I have lost my best friend. I adopted June when she was 5 yrs old and she lived to be 13. It was a devastating loss for me.
I doubted the diagnosis from my regular vet and made sure I told him so and I was right. We all have to remember that we know our pets better than a vet does, we are with them all the time and know their habits and ways of communicating. I will no longer keep quiet when I suspect something else is going on to apease a vet who just because he has a license thinks he can play god with a pet who is just as important to me as any person could be.
I strongly feel in the veterinary field that they have become very money hungry and are losing the feeling for what they are in practice for. So very sad that the world has come down to this.
On a brighter note, my eight cocker spaniel puppies are growing rapidly. I will be taking posed fall pictures of them and posting them on puppyfind.com for sale. They are the most precious little creatures and just hugging them and watching them warms my heart.
If there are any farmgirl breeders of German Shepherd puppies, please let me know if you have or will be execting a litter soon. I am looking for a black and tan or black and silver female with good hips.

Kathy, so sorry to hear about June. She is healed now, running like a puppy. I just lost my best friend, Gallant Ambush so I know your pain. MB

Kathy-

I am so sorry to hear about June. My lab cross Seanee had to be put to sleep in September with the same type of cancer. It so sad and it can take them so quickly. *Hugs* I am so glad for the time that our friends get to spend with us, but when they are such good friends, it makes it all the harder to lose them!

I'm so sorry about June. Losing a beloved friend is horrible. I lost my beloved cat Lusiphur, in August and I still mourn him.

Blessings

Ohhhhh Kathy...I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. How terrible it always is to be faced with that choice...but you did the right thing for your girl. I recently had to do this for my little Maggie. It was so hard, but I knew the kindest thing I could do was to ease her suffering. So difficult for you, but it shows your love for June.

Maggie became ill through our previous vet's negligence. I ended up at IN University's Small Animal Hospital with her. They were extraordinary-so was the bill. Thankfully, I did not trust my previous vet's initial opinion, and so we had 4 extra years with her. Her illness finally got the best of her this summer though. I have since found the most wonderful group of vets. All of my pets go into the office willingly and happy. I hope you will be able to find someone you trust to care for your animal friends.

No one can take June's place, but I'm happy you have the puppies to cuddle & care for. I rescued a dog less than a week after Maggie died...seemed crazy, but it was the BEST thing I could have done. Having Walter has been such a comfort. Sometimes I think HE rescued ME. Hope you find a new shepherd friend soon!
Blessings,
Rhonda

Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear about your June...it's very difficult to have to choose to end the life of your best friend, but that's what best friends do. It will break your heart over and over, but you know it's for the best. She loves you still, and she will always be with you--she's just changed form.

Thinking of you,
J

My Dear Human Friend, A door called "death" has closed between us for the moment. But could a little thing like that break the bone of love and understanding between us, who have been so close? Of course not. Having left behind the body which no longer served me, I can be with you always and everywhere. on long delicious walks, at quiet times and lively times, alone or among friends new and old. Let my excitement with life still brighten your days. As long as there is a place in your heart which is the shape of me, I will be with you. One day you, too, will come through the door and we will be together in glorious ways we have yet to understand.

"Not Forgotten" by Alexandra Day, author of the Carl books.

I always give this one to my clients whose pets have transitioned. I think it's very good.

Farmgirl hug,
Patricia

Kathy,
I am so sorry for your loss. It truly is losing a member of your family. They are our constant, loyal, loving family. They are so special because all they care about is loving and being loved. They don't care who you are or how you look, they are always there for us. Total unconditional love. She will always be in your heart and loving other pets only honors her memory. I love what Patricia wrote it is so beautiful and true.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Kathy. I also found out the hard way to not trust ANY doctor just because he/she has on a white coat and a piece of paper in a frame on the wall. I now participate fully in everything concerning my animals health and welfare, just like I would do for my human family. I was too trusting for too long.

Thank you all for your kind words and sympathy. Each day without my special friend is lonely. Tonight we had a thunderstorm and immediately I wanted to go into the kitchen to comfort her but she is no longer here. I took one of the tiny puppies into bed and we cuddled together and she looked at me, frightened at the noise of the thunder and I told her that June was in heaven looking out for her and not to be afraid.
I sense strongly that two of my other dogs really miss her and feel funny about going into "June's space" where she used to lay all the time. Slowly I urge them to go in her spot that it is okay for them to walk and to sleep there.
I am thinking that I want to get another shepherd (to raise from a puppy- I took June in when she was 5 yrs old) and would like to have one by Christmas if I can find that special one. So, if any of you girls are breeders, let me know - or if u have a shepherd that you can refer a breeder to me, that would be good too.
I called my vet's office today and made sure that she has left for her private cremation. Her ashes will be back next week - that will be hard for me too I know but when I die, I plan on finding a way to have all my babies with me forever.

Kathy, so very sorry to hear about June. What an "enchanted" life she had with you for eight years. I am glad you have warm memories of her to comfort you. I hope that a new Shepherd finds its way to you...
