My 19 year old son sews -hes an art major at Biola University-he even has a sewing machine set up in his dorm! He makes pretty cool bags and sells them at school for a little extra money! he picked up knitting too! His girl friend benefits from some really cool handmade gifts! |

I think that's awesome! Look how concentrated he is, too! My daddy was the seams(ter?) in our house. He made all my clothes when I was a toddler, well, not shirts, and all my halloween costumes and costumes for church plays. It was great to see the looks on churchladies faces when I said "my dad made it"....on asked me if he'd ever been in prison!
"She was built like a watch, a study in balance ... with a neck and head so refined, like a drawing by DaVinci"... NY Newsday sportswriter Bill Nack describing filly, Ruffian. |

My boys (25,19,12)sew too. They mend their own things, can make a quilt, dog pad (even when the girlfriend couldn't), sew short & pj pant. The oldest even made a kilt & sash for himself while serving a mission that had a st patties day celebration. He even cooked the corned beef for 200 plus because no-one else knew how. Hurray for self-suffient kids!!! (Including 5 girls who sew, mend & design clothes)

Isn't it great that we are raising kids that know how to be self sufficient! One of the greatest gifts that my mother ever gave me was learning how to cook and clean. I was not ever too interested in learning how to sew when I was little and I wish I had tried harder- but I am learning now! :D

Mima, awesome that your son sews for extra cash while in college. I was an art major in the 70s and used to do sewing on the side, as well as make macrame necklaces to sell (all the rage then!). Over the years, the "fine art" part of me fell by the wayside and I have always returned to the textiles for enjoyment. I love it when people ask me, "What do you paint?", as if that is all an artist can do!
