I was just reading the joke about the little girl saying grace in the "jokes" thread, which reminded me I wanted a collection of table graces. Does anyone have some they could post here? I'm thinking of embroidering them on breadcloths, towels, potholders, etc.
Here's one of the ones we used when we were kids:
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you God, for everything!
Can you help me by posting others? TIA!

There's the Scottish "Selkirk Grace:"
Some hae meat wha canna eat,
And some can eat wha want it,
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.
(Some have meat who cannot eat, and some can eat who want it, but we have meat and we can eat, and so the Lord be thanked.)
I like this one.

In Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, I remember saying,
"God is great, God is good and we thank you for our food"....
That's what I remember, now it certainly could have been something else because also from that same time, I remember the Kenny Rogers song (You Picked a fine time to leave me Lucille) as ".....Four Hundred Children and a crop in the field...."
"She was built like a watch, a study in balance ... with a neck and head so refined, like a drawing by DaVinci"...

That is our long time, family blessing, and even though we use many others, sometimes our little granddaughter asks for it especially.
Here is another one we sing:

We just say the traditional Catholic meal time prayer and then add any special intentions to the end of it.

Yes, I imagined it somewhat like the old woman that lived in a shoe--that's why "you picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille..." worked--gosh, gal, you left me with Four Hundred Children and a crop in the field....used to belt that one out at the top of my lungs, I did :)

Our grace is a little different each time, when grace actually gets said. I'm a little ashamed to admit that when gaggles of teenage boys are involved food, not faith, seems to be the number one priority. They tend to dive in while the rest of us are bowing our heads  . I'm trying to put a my foot down and an end to it, but ya'll know how that kinda stuff goes. Anyways, ours are different each time. Asking blessings for certain people in need and asking God to watch over those who aren't with us, that sort of thing. Without fail we ask that the food is blessed to the nourishment of our bodies so that we may better serve the Lord. I read one in a book one time that I always liked.

Here's one we sang at home on occasion.
Evening is here the board is spread, thanks be to God who gives us bread. Praise God for bread.
Otherwise, we just prayed for whatever was on our minds, for family and of course for the food.
My family has moved down South as of 3 years ago so we are able to spend more time together and nice meals out. Since we are essentially in the buckle of the bible belt, it is a kind of comfort to know that around here, a prayer in a public restaurant is more common than not. Kind of cool too when a waitress or waiter bows their head with us. (I peek)  |
