Monica- homeschooling won't keep em home either. My older boys( I have 5 kids,9 grandkids- homeschooled all of em!!! this is year 26 of teaching)both swore they would NEVER leave this property- now one is in KC, Kansas and the other in Lubbock Tx-both exactly 12 hours away!!!
They call regularly and miss home-BUT still live 12 hrs away!
Even pouting doesn't help, Bonne!
We will be travelling this summer to see everyone AND the Creation Museum in Cinncinati Ohio.
Anybody know of a good area to see Amish in that area of Ohio.
I dont want a tourist trap- but authentic Amish maybe their cottage shops or something?
This is as close to PA as I have ever been- I would LOVE to go to Lancaster Co!!!

Jess probably would~they're in Indiana too. In fact a friend of ours that goes back to Indiana regularly got me several books from an Amish store there.
How's your Lubbock rookie doing? I about fainted when I read about the 4 officers in Oakland.

Autumn~i know that there are alot of Amish in Ohio. I will have to ask my friend for good authentic Amish places to visit. She lives in Ohio. I would love to go to the Creation Museum, too. It sounds like you will have fun visiting.

Bonne~I must be doing something wrong when I look on Craigslist because I don't find those.

Bonne-My lubbock rookie is fine- loves his job. I still just live in denial- I never think of him as an officer-that way I don't lose sleep!!! Too much chaos in the world to think about it too much.
I'm happy to think about feeding my chickens and tending the "farm" and take one day at a time.
After all-I really don't NEED MORE grey hair!!!!!

Autumn, we went to Lancaster, PA back in 2003 or so. What was fascinating was that there were those Amish in the buggies, but other Amish drove cars. We even saw Amish people shopping at Costco. I purchased some Amish items. There was this gorgeous quilt hanging up on the wall. The price was so reasonable, and I would have bought it in a heartbeat, but dh was in a rush, and of course would rather use the money on something else.

Autumn, There are some wonderful Amish places in Ohio, but I can't remember where exactly! I will have to ask my mom! I know at some point I will have to let them go, but at the tender age of 5 I don't know if I am ready to send her off to school almost 20 miles away!!!!!

Ok, girls, if anyone comes to Lancaster PA you have to let me know, I live 1 hr west of there. There are different sects of Amish, the old order Amish do not use any automation, such as electricity or cars. Others are less strict and do drive and shop mainstream etc. Not unusual to see them here most anywhere. I love to see the buggies loaded up with the families, horse drawn of course. Very picturesque, but since they don't usually want their pics taken it's best to ask first.

Teresa, My mom keeps offering to take Hannah for the school year and she could go to my old grade school 7 houses down from where my mom lives! It's tempting!
Some one mentioned about starting in July! They have what is called a modified year round schedule here. they have 2 weeks off in October, December and March and they get out the middle of May for the summer! They also get out an hour early on Wednesday!

Goodnight ladies!!

Monica~wouldn't you miss her if she was at your mom's for the school year. Although sending her to school 20 miles away sounds way to far. Homeschooling is great. There are so many things you can use and do with the kids. It's great fun but work also. I love teaching the little ones. I use to teach first grade and Kindergarten. So much fun!!! Think about it~it's not easy and not for everyone but is so special when they are learning from you. Then you see the lightbulb go on in their head when they understand something~and teaching them to read is just great. You can go at your own pace~well the child's learning pace. Fun~Fun!

We are busy working on school. My son has an eye dr. appt. He is legally blind in one eye and we have to go quite often because we are trying to get that eye to work again. It's amazing that he draws so well with only one eye. He also has art classes this afternoon. I really need to get somethings done around here before we have to go out.

Have a great day!! Hope to catch up with all of you later.

Monica- ya know you could always teach her yourself for a bit and see what you think. 20 miles is a long ways to me too.
I have been blessed to have mine so close for sooo long- it was dreadful when they did move away as adults because of how close we all are.
As Ruth said, it is very rewarding when you see them learn firsthand-also you are able to model the kind of behavior you want them to copy-that's the tough part. They are ALWAYS there and always watching- keeps mom on her toes for sure!!!
But it is hard work and gives plenty of opportunity to "die to yourself" so you can manage whats best for them.

Ruth, I could never really send Hannah to my mom's for the year! I think I am going to start doing small things with the kids and see how it goes!

Autumn, I know exactly what you mean! They watch every single thing you do!

I think homeschooling success depends on the motivation of the instructor as well. I was much more motivated in my 30's to teach things, especially with the preschool age children I cared for. If I had to do those things now in my 50's, I'd send them to preschool LOL. There's definitely a reason why our bodies shut down the baby factory when it does~hahaha!
Whatever you decide, Monica, the best of wishes to you and fam.

Monica~did you get my email?
I think there is great curriculum that you can use and are so much fun. Five in a Row is great~so many out there. It takes a little research to find what's best for you.

Bonne~I agree with you. You have to stay on your toes when they're around all the time and really keep up. If you slack off they will to. Although a couple of days of slacking a little is fun and doesn't hurt.

YEP! My motivation is almost zero now- but when I had 5 at home and taught with a baby on my hip I must have been a swirling tornado!!!
I can't seem to get so much done these days.

Seems we turn a bit inward at this age....hmmmm- anybody else feel that way?
Seems I'm following my own interests now and really digging in when I enjoy something. I don't hoard special dishes, linens etc for someday- This is SOME DAY!!!!

Exactly Autumn! Suzun Weed mentions this in her Menopause book as well. It is OUR time for taking care of OUR needs now. A metamorphosis.
