Stella is just about ten and half months. For all those that have been there, done that, what do you say about water...and fluids in general. She is still breast feeding, but she pretty uninterested at this point. Just wondering what all the farmgirl experts think?

If I were a new mother now...... I would offer water and milk and that's it....... fresh cut up pieces of fruit, but no juices. The whole corn syrup thing just freaks me out! When you introduce a sippy cup and she's eating solids, she'll be thirsty for water. There are few juices without corn syrup....... why get her started on the sugar thing when you're so lucky that she hasn't gotten attached to the stuff!

It's hard to see what some mothers give their children when you're grandmother age. You just say to yourself "I wish I'd known better back then". Mothers are so lucky now, they see all the mistakes we made!

What about juices that are 100% juice? Those should be okay, I would think. Nora gets some 100% juice with her Cherrios. She also likes Whole Cow's milk (they need the fat in milk human or otherwise, for brain development according to my sister who is a Early Childhood Development graduate), and water. I would be happy to ask my sister for more recommendations if you want, Meg.

There is one reason I wouldn't give more 4 ounces max a day is the coating of teeth with sugar, the american academy of pediatrics has a good little document on this. I'll relay it here, I really feel strongly about this, I work at Native Medical Center and they documented a huge increase in obesity and small stature when any kinds of juices were introduced. Chompers are made for grinding fruit, you get the fiber with the fruit when its chewed and digested that way. I asked a pediatrician about this when he floated into the ER, he said he wouldn't introduce juice as a parent and if he did, he watered it down 50/50. There are thoughts that most of our obesity problem is the huge intake of calories from liquids, it's just too quick to pour all that down the hatch!..... just a note here from a bossy nurse!! jo

I think water is okay. Zoe and Grace both waned in their interest in nursing and Zoe is still nursing at 22 motnhs! When I introduced juice I gave her whole juice, not juiced foods...like Naked juice is what we started her on...strawberry banana. I think she was maybe 1 when I started her on juice.

the main objective is that she is hydrated. BReastmilk, food and water provide that for her.

I gave my kids water and then very diluted juice. They are still water drinkers. Some kids never learn to enjoy water and I think it is important to start that early.

Well my daughter is just over a year, and I still haven't given her water. I just give her breast milk. Cause, she's so small (not on growth charts) I feel I don't want her to fill up on things that aren't food.

I've just started giving her other food that isn't breast milk. The dr/ped and my mom (also a dr) says babies don't need anything but breast milk till they are 1 year old. You can give them other things, but they don't "need" it.

I would keep her to water and milk only. I started both my girls on 100% juice when they could drink from sippy cups and they would never drink water after that.

If you give a baby 100 apple juice you can cause all kinds of problems with their digestive system if you do give juice make sure it is 50 % water or more. Warning babies get addicted to juice easily if you want to still nurse as sometimes the induction of juice makes a baby only want that( I did nurse mine till my kids hit between 18 month and 20 months they all weened them selves then and would only nurse when sick comfort thing I guess). Any way try to stay away from berry juices can actually induce allergies if given to young.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Breastmilk is the perfect food, and as they grow and get more mobile, they will need more liquids to stay hydrated. While they still are getting the nutrition they need, water is the perfect thing to keep them hydrated as they are more active. I would stay away from the juices til she is one and then start her with 100% juice at a 50:50 juice/water mix.

Thanks girls. It sounds like you are all on the same page on this one. Breastmilk is best, and if she refuses to take enough to stay hydrated then water helps. And the juice/water mix instead of straight juice sounds good too. Now if I could just get her to take a bottle or sippy cup. She is just anti fluid right now. It would be easiest if she just wanted to breast feed! Ugh. But I'd be bored if life were easy, right? Thanks girls. The advice really helps.

Meg!! Stella will be 1 before we know it! how wonderful!! Ditto on all the advice here. Our kids didn't get juice well watered down (sometimes more than 50% water) and whole milk until close to the one year mark. With this third little one, we are much more flexible. I'm giving Rianna water and watered down juice to practice with on the sippy cup. she has such fun. She's still nursing well and loves pieces of fresh fruit. Pears are in season now and the ones we get at the farmer's market are to die for. Rianna goes ga-ga for them. She also loves fresh peaches too. She gnawed on watermelon all summer long! So glad to know you are doing so well! My love to you and yours...julia hayes

Hi, Meg! Arthur just turned one the beginning of August, and I give him water, 50/50 juice (which, incidentally, I had when I was little, and full-strength juice still tastes "strong" to me!) and milk. My boys wax and wane in appetites, and I'm sure little Stella is the same - she'll be back drinking in no time. Have you tried a small regular cup with her? William LOVED regular cups as opposed to sippy cups. I had to sort of "backtrack" him into sippy cups because, well, real cups just spill so darn easily! Love to you all!!!

XOXO, Libbie

Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one NOT weening early. It seems like every where I hear people "weening" sooo early. I will let my daughter choose when to stop as well. I'm not really pushing it at all, and won't even consider pushing weening for her till well after 2 years. In fact, I personally won't care if she nurses till 3 years old. I know I am the odd "woman" out for thinking like that. But, I see it as giving her really natural and healthy nutrition. But, any way, glad to hear a few others aren't weening early either!
