Just doing some research on dog food. What type of dog food do you feed your "small dogs" and are you getting good results? Small would mean below 20 pounds.

We feed solid gold Hundenflocken, my dogs look really healthy and beautiful, we supplement with a little salmon and rice, raw carrots. You can see them on my website... jo

My dog gets prescription science diet DD or sometimes ID dog food from Science diet. He has irriatable bowels so anything else really sets it off.

I feed my Scottie dog, Angus, "Newman's Own" organic dog food. He LOVES it. No fillers or preservatives. He gets 1/2 cup in the morning when we get up, and 1/2 cup at dinner.
For a treat we give him baby carrots or raw broccoli. I know the kids sneak him stuff too, but I try to lay off the table treats whenever possible.
He is such a brat that he won't drink tap water, he will only drink bottled or filtered water. In his defense, I won't drink it either, but he is a dog after all.
I found this brand at my local health food or high end grocery store.

Hi Tina,
My dog, Pepper, is a small mix breed who turns 14 on Oct. 1st...yeahh!!! He is amazing...been all over the world with us (Panama, Japan and many places in the US) and he has Pancreatitis (not sure if I spelled that right), as well as a slight liver problem which his vet diagnosed him with last week, but she feels it is due to his age, not health. So because of his sensitivities to food, he is not allowed any table scraps whatsoever. He eats Healthy Weight Beneful dog food and gets fresh vegetables or fruits as treats. He enjoys lettuce, cucumbers, carrots and peppers as well as apples and oranges..no grapes. He loves them and goes beserk when we eat them, but I heard from his vet that they can be poisounous (I can't spell today) to dogs. Pepper has been on this diet since Panama and doing quite well according to his doctor....he is my best friend:)

Well- we have tried lots of different dog foods and my Saint Bernard eats Dog Chow. Everything else gets her tummy upset. She gets 3 cups a day and she is one big girl. She will however eat anything she finds, and we end up paying for it later cleaning carpets etc. She must weigh in around 160. Oh and she thinks she is a lap dog.

| We just got a small dog too -half chihauhau/ half pug- we give him a small amount of iams in the a.m. and in the evening.He seems to have a delicate stomach too!!!Whenever he gets a hold of ANY people food( which of coarse he loooves!)-even veggies-we pay for it later too! I didn't realize small dogs were so sensitive!!! |

My 35 pound terrier mix, Fritz, gets home cooked food every day. We give him cooked hamburger, rice, veggies'and additives depending on what's on hand and what he likes like egg, cheese (just a little - too much is not good for dogs), and cottage cheese. We're not taking any chances and he loves it.
The important thing in feeding store dog food is to read the label. Run from anything that says "meat by-products". And you'll find them in the expensive brands, too like Science Diet.

I would have to say garbege in-garbage out.
I have a mid-sized dog who eats Wellness brand, fruits and veggies and the occasional raw bone. Not really 100% organic per se -but more all natural and better smellig than the commercial stuff. If I HAD to rely on mainstream food, Purinaone has done right by my pets in years past. (17 year old cat)
Even if I were to have a smaller dog, it would still receive the same TLC and a more wholistic/all natural food |

Hi Doglady--we have a smaller dog, a small field beagle, and she eats the Diamond Brand Lamb and Rice, just like all of our big dogs. Her coat is shiny and beautiful (as are the other dogs), her stool is smaller, and she is ENERGETIC! Additionally, I chose this food for all my dogs, big and small, because the bites are a nice, small size. The pitmix has difficulty with food lying in his gumline, causing decay, and the german shepherd (oddly enough) doesn't like "big chunks" of food.

We rescued a male corgi about 8 weeks ago. His ribs were showing, he had fleas, worms, and his coat a shambles. Our vet recommended a food by Nutro called Natural Choice (organic). You should SEE this boy's lovely, soft, shiney coat today! He has also put on about 4 pounds. After seeing the results, we will continue with this dog food.

Jazzy eats Merrick canned food (from the healthfood store) mixed with a little KD kibble. She likes a lot of variety in the canned.

My dogs are fed raw. I don't think dogs need cornmeal or byproducts in their diet. I did a lot of research on this before trying it, and the difference really is amazing. Before that, they were on Purina One.
No more dog breath. Shiny coats. Their teeth are beautiful, and they have lots of energy. Not going back. |

| I have a rescue German Shepherd with skin problems. I was feeding her From's Duck and Sweet potato which did wonders for her skin. Unfortunatly when we moved I have not been able to find it, I have tried the science diet but at over a bag a month with a $40.00+ price tag it was getting a bit much. I found an organic food at Wal-Mart and I make her a meat loaf of ground turkey, sweet potato, brown rice, carrot and celery. I divide it in thirds and she loves it. Slowly we are getting her skin back in shape. There are sites I found by googling make your own pet food. Hope that helps |

Hey Duchess--we have a German Shepherd, too (Rose). She doesn't have too many skin issues, though I know that they are prone to them.
Sounds like you're doing well with your sweet potato food. I personally think Science Diet is overrated--additionally, my 4 dogs wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole! They let it sit for 4 days and refused to eat it. One of my dogs is a black lab, who's a garbage disposal!
