Hey everyone, I've hesitated posting because of some of the sadder topics about other farmgirls' pets, but I wanted you all to know that our Rose is healthy, and there is no cancer. It was, as Kelly mentioned, a really ugly sebaceous cyst, and they will watch her from now on. Thank you for all your good thoughts, and always being friends when I need them!!!!
Our 4 year old German Shepherd, Rose, has some troubles...when we adopted her at 4 mos or so, she had, what the vet called, a small lipoma, on her side. Basically, a tumor, that has grown as she's grown--I think it's in the muscle tissue, and the vet has never been too worried about it, but mentioned that he'd like to removed it sooner or later. Well, I don't know what happened with it, but I'm just sick over it--yesterday she was fine, and this am, my husband and I noticed that the hair is missing over it, and it looks like it's pus filled, and it's hot--it looks like it's going to explode. All the tissue around it is swollen and hard, I suppose with infection. Oddly enough, she seems fine otherwise--still hording chews, running like a mad fiend at squirrels in the back yard, eating and drinking fine, cold nose. I left a message for the vet today, and will call first thing in the am and dh will take her in.
Can't sleep for thinking about her and worrying about her so.
Of course, we're supposed to leave for vacation on Saturday morning--can't if she's not doing well. Won't, really.
Just think of our girl, and keep us in your thoughts. My dh is trying not to act concerned, but this is his girl, and he's real worried.

Praying Rose's vet will get this straightened out fast, without it being a big problem, Jonni.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm tired this morning, didn't sleep well, but we dropped Rose off at the vet this morning--they will look at her sometime around 11;00 or so when they have a good window of time. Sounds like to them, it ruptured, though. They will excise it, and send it to the lab for testing (i.e., cancer). I'm really frightened about this, but I guess, what will be will be.
Keep thinking those good thoughts, and thanks J

Thank you all so much. I've been sitting on pins and needles all day waiting the vet's call.
The technician just called and said that Rose is out of surgery, and that they had to take "quite a bit" of flesh out--she has a nice sized incision, and that whatever was inside there was "really gross", and full of infection. The vet had no notes--she said he usually says, "could be cancerous" something like that, he's got nothing written down. They really don't know what it is at this point.
She said that Rose is the sweetest dog they've had in there in a while--and was just a dear the whole time she was being poked and prodded. She is staying the night, so that they can keep a watch on her, and keep her resting.
We are going to set up her crate, and get another baby gate to keep the other 3 wild dogs that live in our house out of her space.
Poor girl. I appreciate ALL of your good thoughts and hugs--I know Rose does, too. Please keep it going while this thing gets tested at the lab. J

The waiting part is so darn bad. How long will it take to get the results? I'll keep good thoughts and prayers going for Rose. I hope she gets to come home tomorrow.

Probably about 3 days--just in time to either be totally destroyed or totally elated before we leave on our first vacation in 7 years.
Justin (dh) will pick Rose up tomorrow am after he drops me off at the office. He can take her home and get her established for the day. She'll probably feel pretty poopy, but they should have her pain meds and antibiotics started by then.
You all are so great. I'm sure if we all think good things, it's gonna be alright.

Good luck with your sweet pooch! I hope she recovers from her surgery soon and is back chasing squirrels in no time. :) Please make sure to update us when you know!

Rose is home and already bossing everyone around, like normal (Justin just called). When speaking to the vet tech today, she jokingly advised me to wrap my legs in heavy garments---apparently Rose and her "buster collar" are heck on the legs!!!! She (and her 115 lb momentum) run right into you when going towards the door, or anything, really, and vet tech already had a bruise on her thigh! Her perception is a little off, I guess :) She had Rose in the office with her, "helping out".
We set up her crate again, and she should be pretty still today. She has mulitple meds to take, but her incision looks really good (for an incision ) and now we just wait the results.
This is who you're sending good thoughts to, by the way:

Thank you all (again) so much. I feel your good thoughts, and it's already making Rose better!!!!

Jonni - I'm hoping it's pretty much the definition of lipoma - just a fat deposit that sounds like it became infected. We had one removed from our cat, Fred, years ago. It just looked like a piece of chicken fat. And being home with you guys is the best medicine for Rose, I'm sure! :)

Jonni, Prayers of healing coming from NJ. She is beautiful. I too am a vet.tech. so know how those lovely little "hats" can cause bruises. It'll be off in no time. I'll bet Rose makes a great receptionist in the office!! From the sounds of it I don't think there is anything to worry about. If it was a lipoma that's no big deal so it's just a matter of clearing up the infection. It could have been a sebacious cyst too and those can be cleared up too. Anywho, you are in my thoughts and prayers (and giggles at the thought of Rose in her e-collar). Love, Kelly |
