A very sad day here today..awoke this morning to feed the ducks..and the female duck was not up at the back door with the drake..so I thought at first that perhaps she was sitting on an egg or laying one.. but all the sudden my daughter saw her...
up against the fence at the very back of the yard...dead.:0(
Something had attacked her during the night and well..the sight was rather gruesome.
Luckily the male survived unharmed..and was by the back door quacking..he has been moping around all day. So as soon as the feed stores are open tomorrow I shall call around to see where I can find a young female Peking Duck to give him company again.
I made the mistake of letting them have a nest up under the hedges in the back yard for the last 5 evenings without penning them up..thinking that surely they'd be o.k. in my city lot... my clue should have been yesterday mornings missing eggs..but I honestly did not think that the thing(most likely a raccoon) that had eaten the eggs would be back to wreck even more havoc and this time go for something bigger..:0(
So it is definitely back to caging them up in the evenings. Anyhow..I did cry a little bit..and then was mad..but had to do what had to be done..and dug the hole and buried the poor gal. Not the best thing to be greeted with first thing in the morning:0( Rest in Peace my sweet "Daisy Duck".

I am so sorry Tina, I have had racoons reek havoc on our farm before and it isn't pretty. Once we lost 50 chickens in one night and they were caged. HUGS, Alicia

thank you all. I have been sort of moping today too..along with Daffy... but as soon as I can I will get Daffy a new girlfriend..he looks so very sad today and has stayed huddled up by my back door most all day long.He did bathe in his water today and eat some, but clearly he is missing his girlfriend.

Oh, Tina! I am so sorry about Daisy!! That's awful. The same thing happened to my chickens. It's just such a horrible thing to deal with. I would have cried too.

That's so sad! What make's it sadder is that her mate is grieving and misses her. I hope he finds another friend soon. That would bother me, also....I would have been depressed.

thank you all. I hope I can find "Daffy" a new girlfriend real soon. It is the most pitiful thing to watch a lonely/grieving duck. That is part of what has really upset me about this whole thing today. I have felt horrible that I trusted that my city lot just because it was fenced in..would be safe. You certainly do "live and learn" and sometimes the lessons are not fun to go through at all. Thank you all for giving me a place to kind of just voice about my day and get it out. Thanks.

Tina, So sorry about Miss Daisy Duck. Have had the same experience with chickens when one thought the other closed the coop for the night, it is always heartbreaking. I'm sure Mr. Daffy will love his new mate when you find one for him. Love, Kelly |

That's terribly sad! I am sorry! We have a backyard flock and so far we have been lucky, but I am going to take this post as a warning and keep them in at night... I had been lax on that these last few days... they so love to get up just at dawn and get the bugs under our back window. I am sorry for your loss... I hope you find a replacement for Daisy soon.

Tina, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.
It helps to remind me that no matter how big the birds get, they're still prey animals.
Just last night I was thinking of leaving the hen house run door open all night... then God talked to me and said... you built your fence to keep your birds in, not to keep predators out. So, my birds go to bed at dusk... even if I don't like to go out at dusk.

I encourage anyone that keeps poultry of any kind, to make sure they have a safe shelter to go into at night..something that is proven NOT to allow predators into it.It is easy and cheap to build a moveable pen to house them into during the night. I had to learn the hard way unfortunately that no matter the size of your animal..there is always the possibility ..even in the city..of a tragedy. And it doesn't pay to think that the animals can take care of themselves, or to get lax in any way on making sure they are getting put into their house at night. My hen was starting to set on a nest and I thought that since they were up under hedges against the back of my house up under my bedroom window that surely they'd be fine..it was a mistake to think that. Anyhow..if I have helped to spare anyone else the grief of having to bury a loved animal then it was worth the having to go through this.Lesson learned the hard way..but if it helps someone else...then some good did come out of it.

Sorry Tina,
Not a good way to start the day, I agree. Poor Daffy too :( Hopefully he'll be back to his old self soon. I have lost one chicken lately, but to old age, I think. Now, it seems like another one is going. They're all from my first flock, back in 2003, so they are special girls! I cried when she died too. They're like part of the family.
I'd rather live my life with a "full plate" than an empty one. Life is not a rehearsal... eat up! |

Oh Tina how sad for you. But remember that you gave her plenty of love - you have a very big heart. I swear that animals grieve and that makes it all the more sad when they are left alone.
