Fall is looming, and how many of you hunt? What do you hunt and when? I'm hoping to complete a hunter safety class my DH will be teaching. I laughed and told him I was nervous about sitting in a class with a bunch of young boys with guns, and I guess I'm not alone. There are about 4 other local gals my age who have expressed the same sentiment, so he's putting together a class just for us. :) I'd love to bring home a deer this fall, a turkey and pheasant when the seasons come around. Quail are tasty, I but just can't get over that "cute" thing on them.

We've been hunting this year for grouse and ptarmigan. Take a look at my trip on my webpage. Caribou and moose are next. It's a practical thing for us here, meat is 1200 miles away....... jo

Holy cow, Julie ~ I'm awed... The draw weight on hunting bows is something else! My father has a couple, although he hasn't actually gone hunting with them. I think one has a draw weight of 65 and the other like, 80 or 85 lbs. Veery impressed, lol!

I hunted with my dad when I was younger and I would love to again. Wild meat tastes wonderful to me. Is it too late to get hunting tags for this year?

I have mostly gone bird hunting...and not that in awhile. I grew up in a hunting/fishing family. I LOVE to fish..and love it when my grown boys and brother bring me game meat. My Uncle brings elk for me each year too..my favorite! My husband likes to shoot but not hunt (I don't get that!!) I would hunt more if he did.

Alee, I don't think it's too late, at least not here. I know each state does different things. Wow, Julie, that is great! I'm glad there are so many huntresses. I think our culture doesn't foster the father/daughter hunting experience, and that's too bad. I prefer wild game when we get it. Crossing my fingers we'll have better luck this fall.

We have friends a retired couple in their 70's. They both hunt deer. For the last two years Phyliss is the one that got their deer. And believe me she doesn't let her husband forget it : )JoAnn |

I love hunting & archery, but I haven't yet hunted to kill. My husband brings home the meat. Maybe someday I'll join him since we've got a bunch of growing mouths to feed. My sister started hunting a few years ago - bow & rifle - and killed this buck last year in MO:
She's awesome!

That is a great buck, Jen! You will have to let me know if you do decide to go hunting!

I will definitely give a full report, Alee! Will have to find time to take the hunter education course in order to get my license. Till then, I'll keep scouting & learning & encouraging my kids to love hunting too!

I hunt elk and use a mauser .270. The hunt in my area doesn't start until Nov. 1. My hubby hunts with me when he can get the time off. He doesn't like me to hunt alone but I do it anyway. I've never had a problem. I always carry a sidearm as well as my rifle and I don't take stupid risks like trying to climb steep mountains when there is a safer way to go.
I love the hunt. I just love being out in the forest anyway.
Alee, you can buy your tags right up until the day before you hunt. If you hunt the same day you buy you tags and actually get your animal, you could have a hard time convincing Fish & Game that you actually bought your tags first. You would have to check your local regs to find out when the hunt starts for you up there. Every area is different. I live in area 39. I can get a copy of the regs and let you know later.

Great blog, Lisa Marie - your baskets are beautiful. Sad to hear about the bears; I didn't know mothers would boot out their cubs. Times must be pretty tough. We've had frost & drought issues here this year. Elk are incredible animals. I love just being out among them, too, and their meat has sustained us through many a "dry" season.

I was looking at the Idaho regs and it looks like a deer hunting liscense is only $12? Is that right?

Thank you, Jennifer. Yes, it is very sad for the bears. I really like them (from a distance of course). Elk are magnificent animals. I love watching them almost as much as I love eating them (that sounds bad but it's true). Anyway, it appears you are fairly new here. Welcome to the farm!
Alee, the HUNTING LICENSE is $12.75. Then you have to buy a tag for the animal that you wish to hunt. Deer tags are $19.75, elk tags are $30.75. If you go for the archery or muzzleloader season there is an additional charge of $18.25. If you are just using a rifle there is no additional charge. So are you going out for the hunt?

Hi Lisa-
I am seriously thinking about it, but it all hinges on if I can find someone to loan me a gun! :D I didn't think to borrow one of my Dad's while I was in Wyoming. Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it! I am also thinking of contacting the Game and Fish to see if I can sign up for game meat that has been confinscated from poachers.

Well, I hope you can find a gun to borrow. That's a good idea to call F&G. Working at the courthouse, I know a lot of those guys. At least the ones that work our area. One of them knew about a hard year that we had once and that we didn't get any game during the hunt and when an elk was hit by a car in our area and had to be put down, he brought it to us and asked us if we wanted it. Of course, we did! I didn't even know they did that. I always thought the meat went to soup kitchens and such.
Well, I only left myself 20 minutes to get ready for work. Gotta go!

I think it depends on the area. It's worth asking about! I would hate for the meat to be wasted for want of going to a good home!

Thanks, Lisa. I'm more like an old wallflower ! I do most of my posting over on the Outpost site (www.maryjanesoutpost.com/snitz), but I like to come by & see what's happening over here once in a while.
Bow season for whitetails started Monday here, but my hub hasn't gotten one yet. He's teaching our 6 & 4 year old daughters to shoot a little recurve, and they're amazing!
Also wanted to share with y'all the art of Durga Benrhard. She's a mother & hunter, and her artwork beautifully captures the spirit of hunting (particularly from a woman's perspective). Here's a link to her online gallery: www.durgabernhard.com/gallery.php

Good luck openning day. Got a buck (in the ear). DH dropped him. Thank goodness for teamwork. Nice white-tail deer. Will be a healthy winter with lots of venison. Tried quail hunting, no luck yet. Going to look for time to practice target shooting at the range. Looking forward to trying out some of MJ's spice-up recipes for venison. The deer had a good summer in our area, very fat. The will winter well.

I had a close friend call a few days ago to ask if I would teach her to butcher a deer or elk..or both..as her two teenaged sons are going hunting for the first time. She hasn't done it before. she said she would give me LOTS of the meat for helping and teaching her. Great deal for me~!~ I have been cutting and wrapping game meat for years and years. And jerky is so fun to make!!
