Hello Ladies, Just read about this site in an inspiring article on Mary Jane in the Chicago Tribune. My father lives and farms the family farm (in the family over 100 years), 250 acres in west central wisconsin. My husband and I hope to move out there to live in my great grandmother's empty house and possibly continue the family legacy or just be hobby farmers?. My husband is from the suburbs, but we both love to garden, he loves to cook, and we support local organic farmers for raw milk and veggies. I am an acupuncturist and herbalist and have been urbanized to some extent having lived in Los Angeles and SHanghai and now CHicago. I have some anxiety about how I would adapt to such a remote area again although whenever I go visit my whole being relaxes.
We hope to have a baby soon then remove him/her from this most polluted city. Maybe I will start an herb farm...want to plant ginseng in the woods this fall..always wanted sheep for some reason...(love sheep cheese?)
I'm interested in others stories who made the transition to rural from urban and built farm businesses..maybe will start a new topic or search the old messages...
Thanks for reading,
Nicole

Welcome Nicole,
I hope you plan on moving here to west central Wisconsin. I love my home town.
Would you open a shop?
Or maybe teach classes in herbs?
Enjoy the forum, I sure do.

Hi, Nicole. I just posted a new subject searching for farm girls in Chicago, and I saw your headline. We live in Riverside and have a farm 80 miles west. I assume someday we'll move there, but now with small children, and a son soon to college, and a husband working in the loop, well, it doesn't seem to be the time. However, I'd like to connect with like minds close to home. I vegetable garden, cook from scratch, make soap and am very interested in herbalism (just learning). Do you have children? How often do you visit your farm?

Nicole, I just wanted to welcome you and hope you come up to join the good air soon! Cheeseheads often give flat landers a bad rap for moving up here, but you are a native and are welcome back any time! LOL It is good to see you here! I cant wait to learn more about herbs from your posts. I am finally geting a little bit of chamomile and lavender to grow along with some peppermint and oregano! I love chamomile and pepper mint teas and hope to make my own soon.

KarenP: I have had that spring water-sold in Durand near my Dad's place!! Last 4th of July we accidentally ended up in the middle of a parade in Chippewa falls. I do like that town.

And ladybugmom : thanks both for the wisconsin welcome. I have had many grand dreams of opening a health retreat in the country complete with an organic restaurant (my husband the chef) with seasonal healing menu and herbs from my garden, with acupuncture and massage available. Maybe I'll just have a small shop/clinic in town?... fun to dream.

Judi: I don't have children yet (we are hoping to be pregnant soon). We try to get out to the farm at least once per season and maybe more during summer and fall. Always so hard to leave...as you know I'm sure.. (I also answered you in the other topic)
