OK, I know I can buy new Ball jars at the store for about $7.00 a dozen, more or less, depending on size.
And I just bought half a dozen Leifheit jars from Amazon and paid way too much (thought I was getting a dozen...) they're funny-shaped and I could only get 5 of them in the canner at a time http://www.nextag.com/Leifheit--2700400/canning-jar/brand-html
I've bought boxes of them at auctions before from $.10 to $.25 a jar.
I never see them at garage sales...but then I don't stop at garage sales all that often.
I used to buy the Classico spaghetti sauce to get the MASON jar until I figured out that I was paying at least $1.00 per jar extra.
So, where do you get your canning jars, and what brand do you prefer?

Those are pretty jars..but pretty expensive too..sigh..
I have collected my jars over the years..some new, bought at the grocery store or where ever, and alot from my grandma, Aunts and elderly neighbors as they quit canning. I even got alot when we moved into this house from the daughter who grew up here (she is in her late 50s now) and said she dosn't have time for that anymore. You do see them quite often at yard sales here..and thrift stores too, but honestly alot of times if you ask around or get the word out that you will take them, people have them sitting in storage not being used and give them away alot of the time.
I like Ball and Kerr best..but have others too. I have some Ball jars from the 70;s when I first started canning. I don't have much else left from back then, but I do have my jars..haha.

| Yard sales, definitely. It'd be awfully expensive to begin canning otherwise. I have lots of people looking for them for me too. |

Flea markets (the year-round variety), Goodwill type stores, I find them at Savers alot. Shop the farm supply stores at the end of the season, you might find them on sale.

Brenda, you could check Ebay or craiglist.com if there is one in your area, too. It's amazing the stuff people hang onto, and usually they don't even want payment for them. I've built my own collection a box at a time, and from some giveaways from older friends and relatives who don't can anymore. I'm also fortunate that most people bring me back the empty jar when they have finished with it. I'd hate to have to continually restock!

I have gotten them from flea markets and yard sales. I also have gotten them new in a pinch. But I just realized people ask me all the time if I am canning this year and if they could get Salsa, jam etc. I don't mind because we never eat all that I can but I never get the jars back. How do you all handle this? Thank you,

I went to TSC tonight - and couldn't believe they don't carry them. I asked my daughter to look at yard sales.
You are right - I gave away about 3 dozen pint jars at Christmas last year and didn't get but a few back! I'm afraid I don't handle it well at all!

Whenever you talk to neighbors family and friends(especially elderly) mention that you are canning. When my neighbors found out that I'd been starting to can this summer, 3 of them gave me a bunch of their surplus jars and lids/rings. One even gave me the water bath pot and inner gear, as she didn't can anymore. They were all happy to see the stuff get used.

All my friends know to collect jars for me year round.
One time I had to scramble to find enough jars before one of my biggest sales. That was too much stress
Whenever i'm at the store, i'll sometimes buy a box of jars. I prefer Ball but any of the other canning companies will do. I also pick up multiple boxes of Ball liquid pectin.
My mom frequents yard sales and the area where my folks live has people downsizing all the time. Mom also volunteers for the local Habitat thrift store, so she keeps me well stocked.
Those jars with the funky shapes are way cool. This time of year, the zoo has its yearly fund raiser, so i make a jelly/canned garden basket and try to use oddly shaped jars.
I also save tomato boxes from the commissary. the boxes are extra tough, stack well for jar storage, and allow for easy set-up/transport when I sell jellies at the craft fair. |
