I turned 50 last week and it was surprisingly hard, time moves so quickly and you aren't a little girl anymore but you still feel like you are! These are my resolutions for the next 50....

1/ I will try to speak kindly even if I think you're a damn fool....

2/ I will eat a high fiber diet even though Reese's peanut butter Cups seem like a main meal (especially after having my colonoscopy).

3/ I will keep my opinions about my son's girlfriend to myself, even though she is an evil-doer.

4/ I will run through the woods without screaming if I hear a bear again.

5/ I will spend less time on my tush making stuff for people and take care of myself better by walking more, eating less and complaining less.

6/ I will refrain from outshooting my husband with a shotgun and hurting his self esteem.

7/ I will spend less time online shopping and more time goofing off with my friends.

8/ I will stop enhancing world debt by limiting my use of credit cards.

9/ I will hesitate from being an eco snob, not everyone can recycle efficiently....

10/ I will laugh more and buy less junk............

Okay guys, that's it for this half of my life, a toast to yours.

I'm blogging more, you can keep up with my shrinking daylight in alaska by visiting and say hi. jo in alaska!

Wow, Jo, first of all congrats on the birthday. Been there done that. I love your resolutions. They would be wonderful in some little booklet about turning 50. Good words for us all to live by.

Happy Belated Birthday, Jo! Love your list, however I would seriously rethink #4! Screaming seems highly appropriate in that circumstance. Hugs and here's to the next 50, Nance

Happy (belated) Birthday, Jo! I think your list is wonderful.
You know, if you eat your high fiber diet with your Reese's PB cups.......

Happy 50th!! I think that my 50th was my best birthday. I finally felt like I was at a place in my life where I just didn't care what other people thought anymore. Very liberating.

I love your list!

Happy 50th Jo,

Here's a little advice from a gal 11 years ahead of you.

This REALLY IS THE BEST PART OF LIFE.

For the next 15 to 20 years, don't worry in the least about "expressing yourself", or winning something. You've earned the right... and believe me, folks will get out of your way, simply from respect.

Since turning 50, I've successfully

a) changed careers twice

b) taken trips I would never have attempted (or found the time to take)

c) found that I really can do what I want, when I want, as long as I can pay for it.

d) become totally comfortable with aging. My mind thinks I'm 30, my looks say I'm under 50, and my body sometimes thinks it's 70... oh well.

I'm real proud of you for choosing not to meddle with your son and his girlfriend. You are to be commended on your health awareness and goals you've set for yourself. This is a time in your life where you must concentrate on YOU.

Oh, and as for hubby and the shotgun... tell him to keep practicing!

One last thought... always wear your "bear bells" and you won't have to scream.

Yay! Great list! I've enjoyed my 50s so much. I begin to see how a lifetime of observation and experience really can coalesce into a store of wisdom. You'll start to notice yourself getting all sorts of glimmers -- "ah ha! moments," I call them -- so you might want to consider carrying a little notebook and pencil to jot things down for posterity. You'll be much too busy living it up to do the "wise lady in the rocking chair" routine, so when people start to ask you to deliver yourself of a Waltons Mountain-style homily, you can literally just throw the book at 'em and go about your business.

Happy Birthday Jo! 50 is great, and at 58, wish I could go back. Loved everything on your list! Cracked me up.....by the way, hang on to that sharp shooting ability - you hubby probably secretly loves the fact that you can protect him if need be! :)

Happy belated b-day, Jo! Love the resolutions. I'm not as strong as you, though. I couldn't stick with all of those!

Well, Jo, last week I turned 51....otherwise known as "49 and some change." Fifty was not a bad year, although I didn't like moving up to the next age category. You know the ones on applications: 18 - 29, 30 - 49, 50 - senility.

I can follow most of your resolutions with a few minor modifications:

1. If I think your a damn fool, and especially if your talking and acting like a damn fool, I am more likely now to tell you -- but I'll try and do it kindly.

2. I now eat a high-fiber breakfast, followed by Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

3. I keep my opinions about girlfriends to myself (unless asked) but sometimes the way in which I DON'T say something let's them know what I'm thinking!

4. I don't even go into woods where bears might be a possibility.

5. This one is great - no changes needed here.

6. You know, there are a lot of things my husband can do better than me. So if I have a skill where I excel, I will practice that skill and be proud of it. I won't rub it in, but neither will I downplay my ability.

7. and 8. Enuf said!

9. It's hard not be a eco snob when simple recycling can make such a difference.

10. I will buy more junk that makes me laugh - or at least smile!

And here's my addition:

11. I will continue to practice good skin care and the occasional hair coloring, but I will accept the wrinkles and gray hair with grace and good humor. They are part of my life experience and reflect who I am and where I have been. Although I do know how to use Photoshop to "clean up" those less than flattering pictures. ;-)

I've learned that it takes as much time and energy to wish as it does to plan.

Happy belated birthday to you, Jo - so sorry I must have missed this post earlier.
I LOVE your ideas for turning 50. I agree with the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; they are the best. It is just lucky I can't get them here in Australia or I'd be way too tempted!!
Best wishes,
Jayne
