Right now being without birth control is not an option for us. I am currently using the Ortho Evra patch but there are a lot of health risks associated with it. I have tried the pill before and I always forget to take it. We would eventually like to try to have kids so vasectomy isn't an option. I have some weight issues and headaches that I am pretty sure are directly related to the birth control. I was just wondering what other people use an how effective and easy it is to manage. Thanks!

I have heard a lot of girls like having the IUD. I've also heard that it hurts like crap when they put it in, and that periods may be heavier. If i had to pick something, I would get that. Good luck, |

I have a copper IUD. I like it but there was some heavy cramping and heavier flow for the first 3 months. I remember a few days after I had it I got a cramp and yelled out "WHOA!" and pulled the car over for a second. It really felt like a hard contraction when I was pregnant, but it only happened once. It didn't hurt all that much when they put it in but there was some cramping that day and I would suggest someone drive you home afterward and give yourself the rest of the day off. I felt a little pinch but the doctor gave me a little numbing stuff so it didn't hurt as bad. But I would not go any other way now. Before the IUD we used a sponge (purchased in Canada since they don't have them in the US) and I got pregnant and miscarried. I don't think the sponge made me miscarry but it sure didn't keep me from getting pregnant! Then switched to birth control ( I hated it) and then finally the IUD after my daughter was born. In a few years I will opt to get my tubes tied, we are done having kids but want to keep that door open just in case. Now I will tell you this, but I think it's a lie, my DH thinks he can feel the string (its a wire with a cotton wrapping so they can pull out the IUD later if needed) and says the wire pinches (maybe pokes) him. My Dr. says that's a bunch of bull pucky and the Dr. think my DH is just flattering himself (not to be crude) if he thinks he's big enough to feel that! It made me laugh but he cut the string shorter anyway. But I love the convience of it and I don't really have bad cramping anymore. I've had an IUD for 2 years now.

That's hilarious Sherri! Really it didn't work for you? What's the accurace of those things these days? My husband asks me, if (while we're "doing it") can we make an, um, U know...mini monster? ANd Im just like no no no. I am not on any birth control, and have never even thought I was pregnant, but he pulls out, and even if he didn't we wonder whether or not all the bad things he used to do may have harmed his reproductive thingamajigs. ;) Good luck girl, Cristine
PS I'm scared to have kids.

Yep, I got pregnant with the IUD in. It was kinda scary, they had to remove it without disturbing the fetus. It was quite the doctor visit - my regular doc wasn't there when it was discovered I was pregnant and I had to go to a strange doc to have the device removed. I wasn't expecting that when I went up there, and I was wearing jeans and new cowboy boots. Well, these boots were so stiff that I couldn't get them off without dh pulling them off, and he wasn't with me at the docs. So, picture this, I had to get up in the stirrups with ONLY my cowboy boots on - to have a strange man remove my IUD while trying not to disturb my growing baby that I didn't even know I had until that afternoon. Looked like we were filming some crazy western porn. |

Well considering that since I was a teenage my period has never lasted more than 48 hours and I have never had cramping and I don't want to get pregnant(Sherri;)!!!) I think the IUD thing freaks me out! My doctor told me about this thing called NuvaRing but is sounds kindof hoaky. You guys always make me laugh!
Tasha what is NFP?

I use Microgestion Low-E which is progestion. Progestion is a hormone that our body creates, but this change in the level is what keeps you from getting pregnant. It has the 7 days off (or placebos if you take them) for you to have a period. Since I am on this to reduce my horrid periods and not for birth control, my doctor has me take them straight through without a 7 day break. So while this is a "pill" it is natural and using only what your body already produces . . . just increases the level. I have done this for about 1 1/2 years and it has been wonderful.
Hugs & blessings,
Brenda

Brenda - my issue with the pill is ONLY that I forget to take them. I felt very minimul change to my body when using the pill I just forgot to take it all the time.
Ayako - Your post had me laughing so hard! My husband would pull the whole "flattering himself" stuff too! The only guy I have ever been with is my husband so I couldn't say for sure one way or the other. I could definatly see him saying that though! GUYS!

I thought that I would bump this up because I just saw it. I, personally, don't believe in the pill, IUDs, or other devices because I am Catholic but I wanted to second those other girls who mentioned Natural Family Planning. This is not just for Catholics or religious freaks and it can be more reliable than any other method if done correctly. It is also the only natural method of postponing pregnancy and does nothing harmful to your body. You have to keep a journal and record your body temperatures, mucus, etc. but it helps you get in tune with your body and helps your husband learn more about your body as well. You can find classes at a Catholic church but there are also many classes taught by other religions now and you can probably even find a class that has nothing to do with religion. There are also kits that you can purchase online that have all the information as well. Good luck! -Elizabeth |

I third Elizabeth's comments! we use sympto/thermal family planning and love that it has increased our communication and the fact that if and when we should choose to have another baby we can do so right away without worrying about chemicals in my system affecting the baby. Also we will know just when to try because of knowing exactly where in the cycle we are :) Often couples who are told they have infertility simply have too long endured chemicals and have no idea how their fertility works... when they practice NFP they often can get pregnant within a few cycles. So NFP is effective as a planning tool and as a conceiving tool too!

Off topic just interesting to me
Interesting the Catholic view I was catholic at one time in my life. the reason I think this is interesting if that a catholic priest actually created the pill to help people be more fertile and let them know when they where going to cycle.
I do take the pill called seasonal it stops my cycle for three months this is more for my bleeding disorder than not to have kids. When we where trying not to have kids we used other means. Although because I do take the pill I don't worry or think about the other ways any more. As for taking the pill every day I brush my teeth every morning so I keep my pill box on top of my electric tooth brush holder that way every time I go to brush my teeth I see it and it reminds me to take it. The chemicals inthe pill that cause clots in other people just make my blood a little closer to normal and not so thin.
have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe my bloghttp://sunshinescreations.vintagethreads.com/ my web store http://vintagethreads.com/ |

Wow, Sunshine! I hadn't thought of the pill as being able to help with a blood disorder like that! Doctors can be so clever! I am so glad that it helps you like that!

Yuck, birth control is no fun. I'm one of the ones where I forget to take the pill, so I've tried just about everything else. The shot (Depo-Provera) is fantastic for convenience since you only have to get it every 3 months, but if you're prone to migranes or headaches, it's probably not a good option. It made my headaches unbearable-- I could be in bed for days with a migraine when I was on it. The patch can come off with some women, especially if you're really active. The ring can, ahem, get in the way for some ladies.
How about good old fashioned condoms? :-) That elimates the health risks/issues associated with chemical forms of birth control and it still has a high rate of effectiveness. And it only takes a second in the scheme of things to get, ahem again, situated...
And like some of the other ladies mentioned, there's also the ubiquitos "rhythm" method, which is honestly what we use now. But I would only suggest it for ladies who have extremely regular schedules that they are very aware of. It you have an irregular schedule and you CANNOT have a child at the moment, a condom is your best friend!

I've been on LoEstrinFE since '97 and haven't had too many complications
Reduced M time and lesser cramps have been wonderful
I do get really really moody long about the 2 1/2 week but try to back off the colas and sugar (yea right) that- and up the exercise and pop Midol for the first day
I had thought about the patch and those rods too. since then I think those have been recalled
As far as remembering I just keep the pack by my toothbrush and take a pill every a.m. It's so routine now but I have to remember to remove the pack if we are expecting company
and i'm no Catholic but the biggest hang-up i have w/ this church's doctrine are mere mortals dictating what others can and can't do for all kinds of issues-- when it's really between us and God Almighty right? |

At one point I was almost ready to forsake the pill due to my migraines too, but FINALLY figured out mine are more due to extreme barometric changes, processed meats (yucko anyway) and a spot in my back that is probably damaged due to carrying a heavy backpack for all of my school years including college. |

Hey Ladies-
I love each and everyone one of you like my sisters and I don't want anyone to get their feelings hurt, so may we please not discuss the religious implications of birth control? There are going to be two or three really clear cut "parties" in any conversation that brings up religion and birth control, and I would hate for any of my "sisters" to get their feelings hurt when they read a topic that promises to be full of good information. Just my two cents worth :D
Thanks!
