Alright. So I'm trying to knit a hat--a simple hat, on circular needles. I cast on the recommended amount, and put my marker at the last stitch and begin "knitting in the round. After a while, I notice that yes, I am knitting and it's in the round, but NOT connected...like I'm chasing my tail. My mother in law said I was doing something wrong, but she's a newbee, too, so really couldn't figure out how I didn't knit it together. So, basically, I'm knitting something on circular needles that I'll have to bind off and sew up rather than it making its own circular shape. Make any sense?
So. Any takers? What am I doing wrong?

Ah yes. I know what you're doing because it confused me too! Cast on your stitches. Knit across that row. Then DO NOT switch your needles as you normally would in flat-knitting. Keep the needle with the stitches in your right hand and stick it into the first stitch at the other end of the row. I wish I could draw a picture or show you in person, hope it's not too hard to get! You have to be careful to not twist your stitches when you make this first "joining" stitch though, so you don't end up with a Mobius strip. To do this, make sure that all of your cast on stitches are hanging to the bottom of your needles. Tug super tightly when you knit that first joining stitch so you have a tight join. then just knit round and round and round and round!
Keep at it, you'll get it!!

p.s. And hats in the round are so much more satisfying and quick than the flat-knit ones...nothing to stitch up at the end!

Thanks Catherine! I'm trying both to visualize and make my fingers do what you described! It IS 1:00 am here, and I'm biding my time before I pick dh up from work at 3:00 am, so I'm kindof sleepy...that could be why I'm really struggling :)
I'll start fresh tomorrow and let you know. I'm sure it's sooo great to do a hat in the round. It took me a day or two to learn how to purl, so this too, I will get sometime!!!

Okay, I had this problem too...well, actually, it makes me stop and think EVERY time I make a hat in the round. The "secret" is that you have to put the marker at the point where the tail hangs off (ie., where you started), THEN...you have to make a knot with the tail and the last stitch you made-it'll make sense once you do it. Then you just keep knitting until you've reached the length you want. It's actually easier than it seems.
