My phone has been out for a couple of days, so I e-mailed the company to make sure they were working on it. I saw trucks out in front this afternoon then my phone rang and it was the phone man. He said phones were out all over the neighborhood because someone stole the wires. Huh? |

Are the phone wires made from copper? I know here in Arizona, copper has become pretty valuable and copper wires are a hot commodity. A lot of the homes building near me have had their wiring stolen. It's pretty sad how low people will stoop for money. I hope it's back up and running in your neighborhood soon!

Wow! That is insane! I would never climb a pole unless fully trained! My dad was a phone guy for over 20 years and I saw the training that they had to go through. Those theives are lucky they didn't electrocute themselves!

If these pepole put as much effort into a proper job as they do into stealing I think they would be very successful. I mean, who has heard of climbing up a pole to make a few bucks.

Yeah, if it's copper, there have been two deaths (electrocution) as a result of attempted theft here, in Kentucky, in the last two weeks. Apparently, it makes more sense to climb a freakin' pole in broad daylight and attempt to steal great lengths of copper wire, than, say, work for $9.00 at McDonalds on Turfway Road.

When my dh heard about it - he made the copper connection too. I guess I've been in la-la land - I didn't know about that. You girls are right - what a tough way to make a few bucks, not to mention the threat of getting caught and going to jail. |

Makes you wonder what our society is coming to when they'd rather risk electrocution than get out and get a real job, huh? Unreal. My husband was just telling me about how people are stealing the copper wire from construction sites and stuff. You know who is going to end up paying for the foolishness when they steal the stuff... we the taxpayers.

Well, this version of copper theft is even ramped up a notch from what's been going on. I've been worried about my farmhouse not being connected to the pole because of copper theft. So last Friday, we were passed to have the 'juice' go from the house to the pole. And I thought, in my ignorance that no one would be stupid enough to risk electrocution to steal hot wires.....

This happened in a little country town with a population of about 2000 - not exactly the big city. |

It is not just copper, it's also aluminum and iron around here. Blame it on the drugs. It is easier to steel for drug money than to hold down a job and have a semblance of a normal life with responsibility. And we already pay for it, it's called higher prices for consumer goods, higher taxes, and higher medical and higher insurance costs. It is a vicious cycle.

Alot of people here in the valley steal copper from anywhere they possibly can. I worked in a Funeral Home last year we had some people steal the Copper plated Vases out of the headstones, and turn them in for cash. Now the Recycling place wont except them.

Try this one on for size -- my DH & I own our own company selling and servicing pumps & waste water equipment. We've actually had thefts where they climbed down into a lift station to steal anything made out of valuable metals (copper, aluminum, steel, etc.) Now, excuse me, but you've got to be pretty desperate to climb down into a lift station - I mean, how gross can that get? (Actually, you don't want to ask -- I've seen them and could tell you JUST how bad). But y'all are all right - it would be a lot easier to hold down even several part time jobs than to have to steal for your income. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather make a dollar a day honestly than to risk my freedom and soul for fity bucks worth of metal. (Or, in todays scrap market, around sixty to seventy-five dollars worth of metal). |

People are just so odd sometimes. Gotta wonder how some folks missed out on the normal doses of decency and common sense. I like no overhead wires in a community. Looks so pretty in the sunset, don't have to worry so much about where to plant a tree. Except then everything is buried, so I guess you really do regardless. Good thing there were no emergency calls, or that so many folks have cell phones.
We make a difference. |

I have a feeling that one of these days "land lines" are going to be a thing of the past. So fewer and fewer lines will probably be put up. It sure would be nice to have clear horizons even in town!

So then we'd have cell towers all around us instead of phone wires! I don't think there's any way to win.
Stealing the plumbing from vacant houses is big around here too. There's a house for sale on my block and the former residents have had to take down the sign so as not to attract more thieves. Pretty sad. I've never heard of anyone stealing phone lines, though. That's got to be a new low. Or a new high...in stupidity. |

After our last move (hopefully last EVER), my husband and I nixed "land lines" and didn't even have a phone line installed in our new home. We just have cell phones now, and I don't miss it! One less bill, anyway! We just have a family plan with tons of minutes and an extra phone which we keep around the house for emergencies or babysitters.

Our neighbor has an electrical contracting business, and he has had to call the sheriff several times because of people poking around his property in the middle of the night to find/steal scrap wire. Copper is really high. I even heard about a house for sale last winter in Cleveland where thieves broke in and stole the copper pipes- ending up flooding the house.
And here's another news item that's really shocking http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070731/ap_on_re_us/food_bank_freezer and while looking for the article on the Cleveland house, I found a whole list of articles posted at http://www.practicalmachinist.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic f=15 t=000810 p=0
-edited to add, having trouble getting link to post properly, there are semicolons that appear to be spaces. Evidently Snitz doesn't like them.
Apparently they are stealing metal from graveyards, schools, siding off buildings, and even the catalytic converters off your car!
Geez oh man, I guess we're all going to need to install more security alarms.
