I have a new foot for my machine and it is supposed to be the snap on type- but I can't get it to connect! Any helpful hints?

I think maybe it is too big....The foot that I have on the machine has a narrow channel that the snap on part slides into to hook onto the bar, the one I want to put on has a much wider channel, even though the bars look to be the same thickness.
