With all this discussion and well-wishing for poor little Lucy, thought you might like to see her picture -

the other big butt in the picture belongs to Ari - our 15 year old.
Sorry this picture is so big - I don't know how to make it smaller.

Oh my goodness....how adorable! Those eyes! I know it's because of the photo, but what a picture! I hope everything is ok, but she looks good. Nice butt on the other one...lol! Very cute!

What a cutie she is.
Hopefully those 2 were the only ones, but it would be interesting to know what they are.
Good luck

What a pretty puppy Sherri!!
Hope she starts feeling better & gets rid of all her ish..!
That just can't be any fun!! & for a puppy.. she shouldn't have to be dealing with this.. should she.. poor baby..

Ari's cute little rump looks like it needs a nice scratch.. Give him one for me.. & snuggle up the baby for me.. !!

Sherri, please give us an update on your puppy. Did the vet find out what kind of worm it is? Poor puppy!

Girls, What we have here is a bot fly. The cattle that were pastured for the summer would get then on their backs and we (my sister and i) would use the mouth of an old champagne bottle to extract the larve from the lump. There are lots of gross things on the farm. It's just part of being there. However, a bot fly must have made a huge lump on such a small dog. Hope she's feeling better.

I wasn't born in a barn, but I was raised in one.

Oh My Goodness! I Googled "bot fly"! There are some video's on My Space of people taking these "worms" out of animals and humans!!!! The worms are huge and are in a little hole in the skin! Unreal! Sounds like Jill is correct with mikesgirl's little dog having "bot flies"!!!!

Maryjane Lee

P.S. They have teeth to and live off us! Sorry!

My cat just had one of these on his neck. My vet called it a warble(not sure of spelling). He said a certain type of fly will lay eggs on the entry to rodent holes so that whatever animal comes and sticks his head into this mole hole will "pick up" the larvae usually on the neck and act as a host while it grows inside them. The hole you talked about is actually it's breathing hole, along with some necrosis(dying flesh). Sam the cat got soooo sick and his was less than half the size of a lady bug. Vet said this is the time of year for them, and he removed two that same week. That was a month ago, and the hole is just now starting to close up and stop oozing. It sounds just like a bot fly though.

Check out the website. It's thoroughly disgusting!

I've had pets all my life and never heard of this before. I don't think we have them in Western WA, I bet Lucy picked hers up when we were on vacation in Montana or wyoming.

Sherri-

I am from Wyoming and I never had a pet get those. I will have to call my vet in Wyoming and ask if he knows if there is something that he knows about that she could have picked up.

Sherri You do have them in Western Washington. I was telling a friend in Redmond about this and her pet rabbit had them. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it. How's Lucy doing?

Lucy's doing great now. I'm really surprised about the bot flies being here! I guess I've just been lucky before - goes to show you can always learn something new! Did any of you see the news about the man over by Yakima that killed a rattle snake in his field by chopping it's head off? He chopped it in two then went on about feeding his horses and when he picked the head up to throw it in his pickup to leave, the head bit him. He had to go to the hospital. Really strange - I guess it's the same phenomenon as chickens running around after you cut their head off.

We used to live in Southern CA in a rural area and had rattlesnakes aplenty. The fire dept. would come out when you found one so that the head would be disposed of in a sealed container. A head that is just left or buried is still poisoness and is just as bad as a bite if you should step on it or handle it. Two of our dogs were bitten during the time we lived there. Not fun!!
