This happens a lot in Brazil too. My husband lived there for 2 years on a mission and he had mission companions who had boils on their backs infested with fly larvae who had broken the skin to get out from under the skin. very gross indeed.

I never ever ever plan on traveling in any country where this might be possible, ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I have heard of this before of course, and was always very careful to use fly spray on my horses and dogs during the most likey time for bot flies. Again Yuck Glad the puppy is feeling better.

So glad your puppy is getting better & her visitor is gone!. But EEWWWW! That would have really made me sick to see. The visual is bad enough. If I read this before every meal, I think I could lose some weight!

I just thought of a great prize for winning this dubious honor - a new pair of tweezers, since I had to throw mine away! |

Its very interesting what you can find if you google Bot fly, Wow , they just squeeze them out, in Costa Rico, and Belize. Glad my daughter didnt come home with those when she was in Belize. they say the bot fly lays eggs on misqutoes(sp) and then the misqueto bites ya and leaves the egg and it burrows into your skin. interesting |

Yes, yes, rubber gloves for sure!
I just checked her a few minutes ago and the swelling is all gone - if it weren't for the big greasy spot on her side where I put the Bag Balm, you'd never know it had happened. |

My little dauschund pup started getting a lump on her side and my dh pulled her fur back and looked at it and there was a little, perfectly round hole - it looked like she'd been shot with a BB or something. Well, we washed it and I've been putting Bag Balm on it a couple of times a day, but it wasn't getting any better. I thought - well, if it's not better by Wed., I'll take her to the vet. I picked her up this morning and felt it and it really seemed a lot bigger, but also, I could feel something under the skin, sort of under the lump. I gently pushed, sorta squeezed on that part under the lump and I thought I saw some pus come out of the little hole, so I thought - oh it's infected. I had decided I would get ready and take her to the vet, so I put her down, and went to get cleaned up. I came back and looked at it again, kinda pushed on it and I couldn't believe my eyes. There was this worm, larvae, thing, coming out of the little hole! I ran and got my tweezers and pulled it out and it's this big fat, living creature! I couldn't believe it. I put it in a jar to show dh and put some more Bag Balm on her, and the lump is totally gone. What in the world??????
Just wondering do you think it was a tick? countrygirl

It sounds like a screw worm to me too. I remember my parents and grandparents talking about screw worms. I think cattle get them too. I would certainly do more research.

I had the identical thing happen to a cat about 40 years ago. Unfortunately, my story didn't end so well.
The cat was terrified of vet offices, and jumped from my arms as I was carrying her to the car AFTER she had been treated. I was out both the cat and the money for the vet bill.

Well, I spoke too soon. We spent the day out of town yesterday and when we got back, there was another lump on Lucy's side. Well, today, out popped another maggot/worm. It was much smaller, but I think I need to take her in to the vet tomorrow - to see if he can give her a vaccine or something to kill anymore eggs she may have inside. |

It does sound like a screw worm. My sister has a friend that had a cat with one. Right on the soft underside of her neck. Blecch. It is a total gross-out, but that's nature for ya. Hope there are not anymore to be found. Poor thing!!

I think a visit to the vet is a good idea too.
The squirrels here have them all over their bodies. When I see them on the ground at our bird feeder, they are all lumpy. I thought they were tumors, but I read where they are parasites.
Hope the vet can give her something to get rid of them, but she will be okay! Poor little thing! I think the rubber gloves need to definitely be sent to you! :)

Jessica - do you mean the ex-girlfriend herself got a maggot, or her dog did? |
