I think I am going to rescue a half cask planter from outside, bring it in, and trasplant a tomato plant into it. Would that even work? Would I need two and have to hand pollenate? And what is the best way to hand pollenate?

I've done it for two years now, and it works out alright. Put them in the sunniest spot you have, and be mindful to water them. Containers can dry out fast. It'll work best of you've got smaller bush varieties, but if you don't mind the vines all over the place, you can stake up a larger plant on a bamboo teepee and I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it gets way out of control, you can start pinching it back and pruning it down. You won't get as high of a yield as you would outdoors but it'll work. For hand pollination, I always just shake the plants gently every morning that they're in flower, and that works for me. Good luck!
