Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, don't substitute baking soda. My local mom and pop grocery store sells it, but I know some of the girls have trouble finding it. It is right by the Borax in the laundry soaps section. I think Alee posted that you can get it at soapsgonebuy.com also (if I have that name right...). |

I just ordered my supplies for making the detergent and got them from www.soapsgonebuy.com The only problem is the shipping was more than the items cost but there was a discont code on the front page of the site for the Fels Naptha so that saved a little. I won't order again as now when I go to the "big city" I will buy supplies there or have my daughter get them and bring them down when she comes in the Spring. I am also going to ask my local grocer if he could order me a case of each. I can't wait to try this! How long do I have to let the Fels bars dry out? Thanks for your info gals!

Sam, I don't let it dry out, I just grate it. It's pretty hard when you get it... |

This Homemade laundry soap is Fabulous, I have learned so many great things from my farmgirl sisters. Especially cost saving tips, chicken advice, great farmgirl swaps, sewing ideas, and organic recipes including the Sourdough Bread recipe. I cannot wait for the Next Biggie...I think I read that MJ has some wonderful surpise coming in the next issue of the magazine.. I don't know what I did before joining this awesome sisterhood.

I have a Kitchen grater that was my Mom's that I have never used and there are no directions with it so I may have to email you for help Mary Jane if I can't figure it out! LOL! www.soapsgonebuy.com does sell the Fels Naptha already grated though if some of you gals don't want to grate it yourself. I'm doing the sourdough starter also and MJ was on that post and hinted that there is some soft cheesemaking coming up in the next issue of the magazine! Whoa Nellie....I hope I can keep up! I'm like you Cheryl....I am LOVING it all!

Can I get a good recipe for laundry soap, please? I am very new at this and I have a horrible case of eczema and allergies and am tired of paying too much for soap I can use. I am also looking for something as I plan to run the hose from my washer out to my veggie garden to help with watering. I also have a high efficiency washer/dryer. Will that make a difference? I would really love a good recipe and all the help I can get.

Hi Kay!
Use equal amounts of Washing Soda, Baking Soda, Borax and soap. Use between 2 table spoons and a quarter cup. This is find for High Efficency washers. It is also recommended to put about a quarter cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. This cuts any soap residue in clothes and washer. By the time the clothes are dry, there is no vinegar smell left. If you do smell vinegar after they are dry, just reduce the amount of vinegar in the rinse cycle.

PS You can use any soap but most people use Fels Naptha soap, Zote, or Castile Soap. I also just made a batch of special homemade laundry soap that is designed to work with this recipe.

My husband swore by Kirk's or any castile soap for poison ivy. Just wet the bar and rub on the itchy patches and let dry. Just don't use the soap or anything else unless you cut off the poison ivy part Michele

I finally found some Kirk's castille soap, so I will be making a batch of soap this week. Didn't know about the poison ivy and I am so glad to hear about that. I got a nasty case last summer because I don't have to touch it to get it and I was covered. I was in an urgent care clinic twice with no help and I really hate taking those steroids. Of all people, my gynecologist got it cleared up. My late mother-in-law used to tell me to put bleach in the kids' bath water, but I can't do that because my skin is so dry and if I'm having the wonderful eczema outbreak, that sets me on fire.

I work at a hospital and my scrubs need to be really clean! I found the recipie for homeade laundry soap after watching the Duggar family make theirs. It works great! I use Zote soap because it is easy to find out here (Southwest). I also had to go to the Hispanic food store to find Washing soda as no where else had it. My scrubs are so clean and are free from all the artificial dyes and perfumes that can bother the sick children. Hooray! |
