You can put down a grapefruit sliced in half and the slugs will crawl right in and melt away. It is a natural way to get them out of your garden and lawn.

| Sounds interesting. I've also heard of getting rid of slugs with beer and I also know that they will melt away when sprinkled with table salt too. We don't see too much slugs on our property, so I haven't tried the beer, but I have see the salt method in action. The grapefruit half method is a new one to me and I'll have to remember it for any potential future problems. Thanks! |

It is a much more efficient way of controlling them in the garden as salt doesn't help the plants any. I am sure that other acidic fruits may accomplish the same goal. For aphids on the flowers you may try a couple of drops of dish soap, preferably Dawn, in a spray bottle and spray your plant leaves with it.

| Well I don't know about slugs in garden but they are coming in my bathroom.. yes you read me right..BATHROOM!! from under my tub.. I sprinkled a line of salt along edge of tube tonight..Hope it helps..course my hubby might think I'm nuts when he sees it in the morning..LOL!!! |

This is gross.....when our labrador was a puppy he came running into the house with this weird foam coming out of his mouth, he wasn't bothered by it, he had tried to eat a slug. It was like trying to get "gummy bears" out of his mouth, so nasty. Worse yet he did it two more times.

I have tried beer and it works like a charm. I just put some in a shallow dish and when I go out in the morning I throw out beer and slugs and refill.

I never before thought about the actual physical repercussions of eating slugs. EEEEW is RIGHT!!!!!LOL!!!

Oh, Pauline. That is disgusting. But it made me laugh out loud! My parent's Boston Terrier eats toads, lizards and slugs. Well, tries to anyway. You can tell immediately when he does- he flies in the house at a rapid pace, shaking his head and foaming at the mouth. The dog is seven years old, and has not learned yet!! Silly thing. That's why my brother calls him Il Mutante! :)

crushed egg shells around your plants work great too....... just sprinkle them around. to slugs its like walking on glass.

| I have slug issues in my garden. I've tried the beer and eggshells and they seem to work. I find slugs and snails in the beer traps. Luckily my 11 year old son enjoys checking them for me. I will definately try the grapefruit too. |

Oh I hate slugs, they used to crawl in the floor of a house I lived in once that had no foundation. I have been scared of slugs for years - the only time I ever wet the bed when I was little was because I had a dream I was trapped in a blind alley with a gigantic slug coming after me, when I woke up I was sure there were slugs under my bed and I couldn't brave the floor - I was three I think:)

See... this is why I have cats! My cats never tried to eat slugs. Of course Diego woke me at 3am one morning very proud because he had just placed a mouse in the throes of death on my pillow. Blech.
Slugs in your bathroom!!!!! Just remember to put on the light before you make a night visit to the toilet. If I stepped on a slug with my bare feet in the dark and it squished between my toes, I'd probably have to be hospitalized!
As for gardening, you can try diatomaceous earth -- make sure it's for gardening, not the pool filter type! It's fossilized algea that cuts the slugs up when they slither across it -- it's also good for getting rid of grubs. It works like a charm if your dog or cat brings fleas into the house too. Oh my gosh, You have all had me laughing as I have read your posts.
To think that the kids and the dogs would even THINK that eating a slug would be a "yummy treat" Yuck!! Never mind the thought of stepping on one in your bare feet and having it squish through your toes. .. Then I started thinking about the slugs calling all their buddies saying " Hey Guys!! Look. . . Free Beer!! " LOL!!!
Now, every time I see a slug, I will be thinking of all your posts!!

I am laughing so hard my eyes are crying!!!!! So funny!!!!!! I will try the grapefruit trick. After reading all the posts, (LAUGHING SO HARD I'M ABOUT TO P IN MY PANTS) now I know what those gumball things my dog was yacking up were. I even remember seeing the antenta's in the yack!!!!!!!!!!!!! Slugs!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the laughter.

We have a real slug issue this year.(the BIG orange ones,must be a new breed,never saw orange ones before) I've never planted peas before and decided to try. The slugs just raved about the delicious, tender plants and if they could write, I'm sure I would have found "Thank-You" notes littering around my garden. I used the beer method and my Sister laughed at me for giving them "Cocktails" with their meal. lol SOOOO, I got inspired to make a little drawing of slugs having a backyard(mine) party and BBQ. I drew slugs diving offa diving boards into bowls of beer, slugs grilling peas and asking the others how they'd like theirs cooked, drunk slugs huddled together singing "ei-yi-yi-yi"...clinking cups together, A slug stretched out on a tiny lawnchair, arms folded behind his head......it was a real "Slug-Shindig!" Ok, so I have way too much time on my hands. But everyone laughed and really liked it. hahaha
Violet, I haven't seen a snail in years. When I was a kid we had both around.
I like the idea of the grapefruit, if I can get them away from my DH without getting bit. lol He loves grapefruit.
The idea of slugs squishing between the toes is a thought I can do without. ewwwww....lolol

Been hunting slugs for over a month in the garden and yard at night. 1/2 ammonia and 1/2 water in a spray bottle. Doesn't hurt the plants or lawn. Tried the beer without much success. I'd get a couple of adult sized every once and a while. But its the tiny babies that were wreaking havoc. One squirt and they are done. A few minutes of hunting around the raised beds for a couple of weeks made a HUGE difference. Now it's every few days or even longer before I go hunting again. =)
