Helllllllllllllp! Me and my family are getting swooped upon by about 20 barn swallows but 2 (the mother and father) in particular. They haven't hit us in the head yet but there's still time as they sure do come close.
There are babies in the nest and as soon as they leave I'm knocking it down, but from what I understand, they will all zero in on us once again next year.
I've heard there are some things that repel them but don't know what that is. Can't even go mow the lawn for crying out loud! Getting tired of ducking. Must look like an idiot from a distance lol.
Thanks,

Rose Marie,

We have a couple that come back EVERY year. I just hold my head high and I've not been hit yet. I love my birds!

You can send em my way! The neighbors already think I'm weird so they wont mind the duck and cover bit while I mow the lawn!

When you mow the lawn, you are stirring up bugs and that's what they are swooping at, NOT you! I find them
wonderful if their nests are in a place where they don't make a mess that you have to walk thru. I took some
absolutely wonderful pictures of the baby swallows sitting in the nest - so darn cute they are. The babies have
bright yellow coloring inside their mouths which really surprised me. They are just one of the best
bug eaters - but I dare say, the swooping they do could be scarey as they do come close - but it never scared me
and I never was touched by any of them. I think the barn swallows are a good omen....and I think you're lucky to have
them. Enjoy their antics - we always say, "here come the jets!"

Take comfort, Rose Marie; Chris is right. We've had barn swallows here on our place for all of the 25 years we've lived here, and they've never hit anyone, not even once. Even the cats ignore them as they swoop. They do a wonderful job of eating mosquitoes and other undesireables. If you get rid of yours send 'em to me; I have five horse stalls, and only two of them have active nests!

Oh ok...I will admit that I like them too. As long as everyone agrees that they won't go smack splat on my forehead. I was nervous for my grandkids mostly plus I read someplace that they have mites and that once they leave the nest that they can cause bedbugs etc. to come into your home! Eeeks! Perhaps spray after they leave?
So I guess I just need to knock the nest down off our post once the babies are out. The post is holding up our porch until we can get it done and then hopefully next year they'll make their nest in the woodshed instead.
I also took pictures just as cute. And I talk to them so maybe they'll remember me next year and be kind

Oh those babies are SOOOO cute! My couple sat on the nest for a long time. I have never seen any babies though. I guess they didn't make it. Does anyone know if these birds make a decoy nest? I once heard that some birds will make 2 nests and will only lay eggs in one nest. The male and female will take turns sitting on the real nest and on the decoy nest until the eggs hatch. Anyone know if this is true or something I made up?

Don't know 'bout dat Julie.
I do know that mine have left the nest. One didn't make it. For some reason it couldn't fly. I gave it a little saucer of water and even left it some dead bugs I got for it. The next morning I went out to see how it was but it was on the ground dead. I actually cried! Hmmm...another reason I don't want nests around lol.
