What happened to my rhubarb? It was going strong, I made three pies out of it, then I went out to pick it again and it was all hollow. What's up? |

Sherri, I don't know for sure, but we always blamed it on the weather. Once it starts to get hot, it seems the rhubarb goes. Use it as long as you can, and hopefully you were able to freeze some for later. Michele |

Sherri, it sounds as though you have some male stalks. These have to be taken out early, and disposed of, or next year you will have less rhubarb. The male parts are hollow and useless. Just a thought..... MJ

You made me laugh outloud this morning!!! How can you tell early on that they're male so you can dispose of them? Are they hollow and useless from the beginning? |

Sherri, that is how you can tell..... There will be some stalks that are hollow, so get rid of them. They are similar to a bamboo stalk. Make sure than when you get rid of them, they are away from the plant itself, if not, they will hinder future crops. MJ
PS.....glad to make you smile.

Thanks - I never knew that and I've grown rhubarb at several different homes. This is the first one that's had the hollow stalks. |
