A Farm of My Own:  question about beans  |

We just bought a house in a farming area, and while we have less than one acre I have put in a garden I am very proud of and next year we are going to get a pair of miniature donkeys and plant a small chunk of pasture for them in the field behind the garden....
Anyway, I was sprouting some plain old dry store bought red beans and pinto beans that would be usually used for just cooking up and eating, just to use the sprouts and I let them go too long.. now they have these long little roots trying to find dirt to grab onto and I was wondering if it would be a waste of time to try to plant them, or if those kinds of beans would take off in a garden in the northwest this time of year, and if you have any tips on how to care for them.. it's not like they came with instructions other than how to cook them :)

| Hi - I am cannot help you with your question about beans, however, I would like to ask you a question. I also live on an acre and would love to put in some pasture. How do you plan to go about it? Thanks! |

Hi Paula! I use a natural pasture grass seed called BROME GRASS. It is the preferred pasture grass here in the Central US, and grows very well with limited moisture. I am guessing you get some good rains in Ontario. Then it would grow thick and lush...and makes good feed for livestock and is beautiful to look at. Hope this helps you... Jenny from Kansas

I haven't gotten too much planned out as of yet, but there is a man down the road from us who does tilling for many of the bigger farms out here, and I was going to have him till up the area where I want the pasture, It's a big field now. then I was just going to plant the seeds of whetever the donkey breeder reccomends, and care for it however the seller of the seed reccomends.... I'm pretty new at this sort of thing myself!

Well if anyone was wondering, my former uneaten bean sprouts are indeed becoming healthy new bean plants!

glad to hear your beans are doing well...I used to get in trouble when I was a kid for planting pinto and red beans and popcorn in my mom's flower beds. She chuckles about it now..but it was not funny to her back then...good luck with the beans!!

| I have a question about beans... I am trying to grow soy beans. They are beautiful plants but no sighn of blooms. Is the growing season long for them? Speaking of planting things where we aren't supposed to,.... My 8 year old daughter and I, this spring planted zuccini seeds in all the wisky barrels and flower boxes on our main street in our town. There ar huge succini plants every where!! Ther merchants are probably wondering what happened>!! |
