Do you Love Wool Fabric and Wool Felt??

There are so many ways to recycle wool sweaters, wool yardage, heck...anything that's wool that you want to throw into the washer and shrink up into that wonderful dense felt

Some ideas: pillows, mittens, hats, scarves, purses, needle and hook cases, pin cushions..Come on and post your ideas and photos!!

Or leave the wool garment in it's original form and create a pillow, etc...such as a sweater for adult or child sized...

"Needle felted" and "Wet Felted" creations are also part of this thread if you are into making your own one-of-a-kind wool felt

That's a great use for them....you gotta post a picture, OK?

Sorry, I'm a winter freak....LOL I just love winter clothes and the brisk cold air...I know..I'm not right

I guess I ought to live in the mountains of Colorado....LOL

Anyway, there's got to be others that enjoy the recycing of wool!!

Stephanie,
This sounds like fun! I'm just getting started with felting and can't wait to try knitting with wool and also shrinking old wool sweaters! If I ever get my mac back from Apple, I'll try to post pix when I finish something.

Oh, that's great Debbie! Wool is wonderful....besides recycling the wool garments I spin on my drop spindle...I'm making assortment packs of extra chunky weight yarns to use for embellishment. The wool just feels so good.

I know, I know....summertime is here...LOL I'm pushing summer through to get to fall...LOL

I've got to hit the thrift store and see if there are any new wools hanging on the rack

Look forward to seeing your creations!

Peace, Stephanie

Does anyone know where I can get some wool sweaters or blankets to felt. Wool is not something that is worn around here (too warm). I knit and then felt wool purses, long process. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks,
Jane

Okay Stephanie.....I did! LOL... I just love working with the felted wools. I hated cutting them up, but glad that I did!!

I get my wool sweaters at thrift stores. Not many in the stores right now because it is summer, but I found mine for 50 cents each during the late winter. I think I'll run by some of the other thrift stores to see what they have. I love using child size wool sweaters. They shrink down to purse size in most cases!! Less seaming to do.

Oooo ebay, never thought of that. Great score Jessica!!

OMG!!! Aunt George...I love the "handy can" for the sewing goddess....I just finished a batch of my Baked Oatmeal recipe and finished off the small can of baking soda..

I am gonna make some of these cans to hold all of my tons of gadgets..

These are just too cute and so useful

Stephanie,
I'm so glad that you like it. They are really easy to make. Be sure to double the wool wall. I fold them over and make it long enough so the wool snugs over the top of the can. I also cut a circle and sew it to the bottom of the can so the wool doesn't slip. I use a blanket stitch on the outside so that it stays flat on the bottom and increases the stability. With the double layer of felting, it will hold any pin large or small. I am really so glad you like the Handy Can!! If you need any help with it, just email me! Oh, please post your results....and enjoy...I love using mine!

Georgann, do you felt the sweater first or do you cut & sew the wool, and then felt it and stretch it wet over the can? I love them, and now I'm going to be looking for cans & jars to cover too!

Aunt George, thanks for the details of the can....I was just looking through my stash and realized what else I buy that's wool and you can usually find it most anytime of the year.

Men's Sports Coats....made from 100% wool

.....I cut them apart and wash in hot water and dry....repeat this process several times and it will "full" quite nicely.....obviously, it isn't as thick as a sweater would be but it will will work nicely for many projects. This weight is also great for penny rugs and appliques.

Peace,
Stephanie

I've got one of those men's wool sport coats waiting for felting right now. I am planning on doing a Professor McGonnagal reproduction hat out of it. Just waiting for the right lining to show up. I had a wonderful cotton flannel shirt for the lining, but one of my daughters snagged it!! LOL

thanks for the sportcoat idea, I'll take a look next time I'm thrifting!

Oh, Kathy (ktknits) I felt first then use the sleeve over the can, but I was looking at the sweaters, and I think I can do a tube from the main part of the sweater and it will work just as well! Just make sure it fits very snug over the can, and be sure to cut it long enough so that it will come up slightly over the top of the can. Then go to the bottom of the can and trim the selvedges even with the bottom of the can, and then trace and cut the bottom circle around the outside of the sweater wrapped can. Each one is done separately and each one will be different due to can choice and sweater thickness, so a single pattern would be impossible! But those are the basics!! I found it is much easier and fits better if you stitch the bottom circle on with the sweater wrap on the can. Be sure to catch both thicknesses of the sweater wrap into your stitching that way it won't slip...so when sewing the bottom circle on, you will be going through three thicknesses!! But getting through the wool is a snap!! I think I'm going to try a decorative blanket stitch on the bottom with the next one. I have a nice Fair Isle sweater style to cut up soon that would look very Northwoodsy with the blanket stitch.

Oh, I have a can opener (from Wal-Mart) that breaks the seal of the can so there are no sharp edges. They aren't very expensive. So the top of my Handy Cans have a nice smooth, non-sharp edge.

Hugs,
G

Hey there,

I've decided to add "Needlefelting" and "Wet Felting" creations in this thread also since we have a few farmgirls showing an interest in it

It's lots of fun! Here is a link to my Needlefelting Machine and a few pictures of my Needlefelting creations.

I've been checking yard sales and thrift stores for 100% wool sweaters. I have to retire my black wool blazer this year, since I finally blew out the elbows! I'll try washing several times to see what happens!! This is fun.

Hi everyone......I should probably go introduce myself, but I saw this and had to respond. I'm in contact with a fellow from Washtucna, WA that has built his own wool-shredding machine. He takes wool garments (mostly knit) and shreds them until they are nice and fluffy fibers again. PERFECT for stuffing dolls and the like. I am going to use some for a woolen mattress I am making for our littlest. It also felts up really nicely if you're a needlefelter. The price is REALLY good.....$3.35 a pound for white/cream wool and $2.35 a pound for mixed colors. His name is Paul....he's a science teacher up there and I'd love to be able to have him get enough clientele to make this a fulltime gig. He told me this is quite common in countries such as India and Italy.....they have huge factories for wool recycling. One client of his bought enough to insulate her yurt in Alaska :) Anyway.........from a fellow wool lover here........howdy everyone!!!

Hey Lisa,

Welcome to the group! Do you do needlefelting?

Does this guy have a website where you look at this shredded wool? You are right, it would be perfect for Needlefelting..I would love to see it...Let me know if you can get some pictures of the mixed colors.

...til next time ~ Stephanie

I love the wool craft ideas. Ive done some penny rugs, small purses and several other things with old sweaters and reclaimed wool. It is hard to find here in the deep south but that makes it even more fun! Only thing is- people here don't really appreciate the wool articles- not enough winter or cold I suppose.Nobody I know is interested.
I'll try to post some pics.
