So how scary is this? This is the back of the house, showing the 2 room 'L' that we had to tear off. I'm trying to find front photos - they're REALLY frightening...
This is the new addition in it's place(don't know why the photo looks wavy....thank heavens the actual house isn't! LOL!

Wow! I wonder if that was the summer kitchen or something? Anyhoo, as much as I love old creepy buildings, I'm glad there's a new on ein its place (and nice that you've matched the integrity of the original structure. Plus you have a solarium window!!!!!

Actually, the two rooms in the back were the original 'house' and were built in 1913. Then, 5 years later, they built the two story house smack dab in front of it! The original two rooms were sitting right on the ground and had some fire damage, so they weren't worth saving. We did salvage all the molding/trim and outer sheathing boards we could and re-used them.

Well that was interesting Janice. Too bad you didn't uncover some hidden treasure in there, not even a pie bird? It sure is looking good now and so big, lucky you. I want a big house, I think.

Well, Nancy Jo, while we didn't find a pie bird in there, we sure found everything else! The trash was knee deep when we started - everything from couches, chairs, a fridge, clothing, leaves, dirt, plaster, bugs, barn swallows with nests here and there on the walls. Once, when we were wiring, a magazine from 1936 fell out of the ceiling! And the first page it opened to had an add for a Shirley Temple doll buggy like one I still have at home - very weird! It took one entire summer to just clear out and dispose of the trash!

| Too bad you couldn't have just sliced that little part off and sold it as a vacation cabin or something. I'll bet my son and DIL would have bought it - that's about how big she wants their new cabin to be on the land they're buying. |

Yes, Kathie, we saved everything usable. Once we sawed/tore off the back, we were left with a huge gaping hole in back of the rest of the house. We nailed wood outer sheathing boards to the back of the remaining house to 'heal' up the huge hole that was left. In fact, the beautiful wood sheathing boards are now at the back of what will be my kitchen, and I'm thinking about incorporating them into the kitchen instead of covering them up. I'm very sentimental about every stick of wood in my house.

Wow! It sounds like you had quite a time getting your house area fixed up! Poor little cabin! It looks like it was probably a really cute house back in it's heyday. I bet your newer house is really nice though!

I'm simply amazed! Is the old house redone into the beautiful two story that we see in the photo. I understand that you took the little two roomer off and put up the two story back part, but the front part is that actually a reduex of the original two story structure? I am amazed and totally impressed!!!! LIke the others, I'd love to see more photos. I think the magazine falling out like that is the house's way of saying you're home!!

Frannie - I wanted to save it, too, but Major Mike said it was too damaged from sitting flat on the ground since 1913. It had nothing under it to support it or keep it from being damaged by water, insects, rot, etc. And there had been a fire in it at some point. I hate to give up on ANYthing. Every time Mike finds some artifact on the property anywhere he brings it to me and asks: "Do you want THIS for your museum???" He called me last week and asked if he could have some of the boulders from the basement hole that are piled up outside for a friend who wants to build a waterfall. I can't even give up ROCKS! LOL
Nancy Jo - I will post inside photos...I just have to find where I left them.....come on over and bring cookies, grandkids and J and D! :D

I really love hearing about all the work your doing.. & what a transformation that was to the house!!!
The pictures were awesome!!!
I'm like Frannie.. I would have moved in to the haunted side though!!!

Well..I love just about ANYTHING old then.. so.. THAT house hit the nail right on the head for me!!!.. OH!! did you see those cattages that FRAN in Texas has & is redoing.. SO Cute!!

Kathie-
It is so sad to be driving around in Idaho and Wyoming and seeing all these old homestead buildings literally falling down in front of your eyes. I want to go save them all. I know that a lot of people make livings salvaging old wood and reselling it. Several years ago it was a fad to panel the inside of your house with old barn wood.
Unfortunatly some of the buildings have been let go for so long- they just aren't salvageable as a building.
My mom and I were talking yesterday and we decided that we both just don't like change. I didn't like it when she bought new furniture- I like moving as a new adventure, but then I have a really hard time adjusting. And I don't like the newer style of houses that everyone seems to be building these days. I understand if you need a big house because you have a business or a large family- but for me a huge McMansion is just now something I personally would feel comfortable in.
Anyway- I think I would rather have an old farmhouse and make it "new but old" again or build a new house to look like a nicely maintained older farmhouse! Yeah I know... I am weird I guess. But for some reason change is hard. I don't even have a cell phone!
So long story short- I love the fact that this old farmhouse is being saved and even the wood and rocks are being saved too!

janice darlin' .. did you get to salvage any of the 'wood' from it? we had an olde barn wood 'fence' built around our huge 'heat exchangers' that sit outside in the yard .. they are soooooooooooo ugly! air conditioner wasn't working .. the air man came and said we had to remove them .. DANG! honey hunk undid them and we made a wooden walk behind the barn to 'set garden' thingies on. but indeed the wood is in good condition. i understand about not wantin' 100 year old critters invading your home!! xo
p.s. when are you comin' down to visit me? i'm only about an hour south of louisville! xo

Frannie - Yes, we did salvage any/all wood. The sheathing boards on the outside ended up on the back of the other old part of the house covering the hole made when we removed the two rooms. We didn't start the new part for over a year, so we put siding over the entire two story house, and then had to carefully remove siding from the back and save it to use on the new addition(the siding company stopped making the color and we only had two boxes they found on the floor of the warehouse, so we measured everything at least twice before we cut anything! LOL! And I'd LOVE to come see you! Right now, we're watering(finally rained some last night) our daylilies(thousands) and getting ready to plant a thousand daylilies(73 new cultivars) we bought last week! Oh, and the weeds are growing like.....well, like WEEDS! :D
