| I want to take an informal poll here - my hair is really starting to grey and I really don't want the hassle of coloring it, or the inevitable grow out period, but my DH seems to like it brown! Plus, the two times I have had it dyed, it was $75 and I could sure use that money for better things. How many of you go au-natural and how many color? |

I dyed my hair for almost 10 years. After I totally fried my hair with chemicals, I switched to henna. I love red hair and could never achieve it with chemical dyes, so the henna worked for me.
A year ago I decided to grow out the coloring. I have vowed to never chemically color my hair again. I've been keeping my hair long for over 3 years now, and I'm paying the price of constantly chemically coloring. The ends are constantly breaking off and they look like straw.
If I were going to keep my hair short (like I did when I first started coloring) and get frequent trims, I MIGHT consider chemical dyes. However, covering grey in my opinion gets really tedious and I had to be done faithfully no less than every 8 weeks or it the grey roots showing out against the darker hair immediately showed the world that I colored my hair.
I gave up the henna because the friction of applying it broke my hair (it is very fragile); not conducive at all to growing long hair! I'm quite happy with my grey hair. Hubby still occasionally comments on how nice my hair would look with some color, but I remind him that his hair isn't exactly spring-chicken colored either ;) Besides, for me, wearing long grey hair down loose is my way of thumbing my nose at social convention about a woman's age and her hair color and length.

I have never dyed my hair, except for one when I tried a rinse out after 8 shampoos kind and no one noticed. That was a couple years ago. I really don't have much grey at all (lucky genes I guess) and I am 48. My hair is very thick and nearly waist length..and it just seems like it would be so much trouble that I decided to just forget it and have it go grey when it decides to. I always wondered at what point I would quit doing it if I ever started..since my hair is very dark brown I would think that it would just look silly after awhile..no one over a certain age hair hair that dark without a few strands of silver, right? So I don't. My mom and sister have colored their hair forever...but my mom was a hairdresser before she retired and she is more high maintainence than I am for sure. I don't remember the last time I went to a hair dresser. I cut my own bangs and then have someone trim the ends of my hair and I am good to go.
My husband has more grey than I do, so I never asked his opinion..haha

| I have decided to stay natural. I have dark brown hair too, and I figured I would have to really stay on top of coloring, or it would look awful. Those lovely greys stand out so much in the dark brown. What you see is what you get----grey and all!!! On the plus side, my sister is a year younger then me, and she has 4 times the amount of grey,, He he he. My mom has been totally grey for a long time, so I know it is coming!! Okay I will tell you, I am 47.Michele |

| I think natural grey, salt and pepper, or white hair is beautiful! I have always envied people with nice silverish hair. It's very striking and I think some people look better with the grey, than with color. |

| I have very little grey hair yet, but I color my hair because I don't like the mousy color it is and it gives my hair much needed body and texture. I have very fine hair and it just lays there, flat and yucky! I get it highlighted at a salon, so it more natural looking than one color with the inevitable roots. When I colored it myself, it dried out quite a bit and ended up a sort of greyish-green color. My hairdresser does a wonderful job, and while it costs quite a bit ($120 every 3 months or so, including tip), for now, it's worth it. When I get more grey and if it gives my hair some body, I will stop coloring it. My mom is 74 and she still dyes hers bright red, which looks a little funny at her age! I love the look of long, grey hair! |

I have medium brown/auburn hair and I'm the big 5-0. I've been covering the grays for about 10 years. I'll probably keep doing it until I stop working in the business world. Then I'll grow it really long and let it be gray, although the lady that cuts my hair says it will probably be white, which I think will look really cool. I color it myself for between $7.50 - $10.00 depending on sales. I can't see spending so much to have someone color it for me.

Hi, Sherri, another natural girl checking in here. I have/had "dirty blond" hair that is now streaked with silver/grey...I haven't ever colored it, except when I was 18 and my boyfriend threw me over for a brunette, and I put in "Brittany Brandy," a soft brown color twice, but after that grew out, I never colored again, never had the desire to be more blond or whatever (and didn't get the BF back either!). And when it started ever so gently going grey, when I was a lass of 25, I just left it. Now at 55, people ask me who highlights my hair and I say Mother Nature. My thinking is that as your face ages, the hair naturally softens in color so the age lines don't show sho much... Now, I do have my hair permed, as it is very straight and I like a little body to it. I can go for six months on a perm, and I am good with that. My mother always colored her hair, I think because she was 5 years older than my dad and wanted to maintain the illusion. My two sisters color, and I just can't get into it...I would never want "roots" to show, I just don't like that look, and if you mess up and go too long...well, as Michele says...you have to stay on top of it and I am just not that dedicated to my hair...Good luck with your decision! I colored my hair for many years and then about 1 1/2 years ago I was just tired of the upkeep. So I dyed it back to my natural color and when it grew I had no root lines. I have a few grays peeking in here and there, but nothing too bad yet. I have a friend who just adds a few highlights here and there, so it makes the gray appear as more highlights . . . if I ever do color again, I think the highlight idea is all I would do. Plus, I am wanting to get a perm (my hair is very fine and straight) and to both color and perm is just too much for my hair. So I think for now I will stay with my natural hair color and get a perm. My hair is fairly long so with a perm I should be able to just go with a soft tossled look with very little "work". I have a bad case of laziness with my hair these days!

Well, I am only 39 and colored my hair for about 10 years, then 2 years ago stopped. I tell people that I deserve each and every grey hair. I worked hard for them.
I just can't be bothered with the time or money to be changing it. I am naturally a dark brown, so it is really noticeable, as I am pretty much all grey now.

| I color and weave my hair and I can tell you that it costs big $$$$! I can hardly wait until I let it go natural! At 47 I am nearly 85% grey and I feel a little young to be THAT grey so I waltz into my hairdresser every 4 weeks and fork over the money. I am very lucky that my husband is all for letting it go natural, he thinks grey is lovely on older women. I agree, I just want to be "older" than 47! Cindy |

Remember ladies, it's what is inside the box that matters, not the pretty wrapping. If you want to color or not, you should do it for the right reasons. If you think it is fun or you just like the look go ahead and do it but you may want to think about it if you are doing it because of anyone outside of yourself or if you are trying to cover your age, which is just a number after all. I am 44 with thin, fine, long mousy brown hair streaked with gray and I wouldn't change this for the world. Just do what feels right to you.

| I really want to go natural, but I will have this big line where I grow out, which I knew and dreaded from the beginning. I would just bite the bullet and endure it until it's grown out, but I don't want to look illkept when I'm out at shows selling my children's clothing. I really don't want to keep dipping my head in chemicals while I'm eating organic foods - seems kinda foolish. |

I color, but just because I like an unconventional look. My current color is chocolate brown with crayola red chunks throughout. I drastically change it at least every six months, though this current combination I might keep for awhile.:-) I do cringe a bit at the chemical aspect of it versus my otherwise organic lifestyle... but I REALLY love my hair, so the salon wins out every time thus far.

I feel like you. I want it grow it out, but it's on the long side and I will have a big line between the gray and the brown. Maria, you said you had long hair and let it grow out for a year now, did you just get over that line while it was growing out?

| I actually asked my hairdresser about letting it go grey and how to go about it without looking totally like a skunk (which is exactly how I would look) and she said something about a reverse weave. I don't really understand but she assures me that it can be done. I will find out one of these days because I can't wait to give up the touch ups!! |

I color and love it. I am 50, my grandpa who I never met had red hair. The first time I dyed it red, I shocked my parents cause I looked just like grandpa. That was a surprize cause I didn't know that. I love coloring it, for me it is something I do just for me. I love red, my natural color is brown with some red highlights. I got grey and white when I was 34. So I have done both, it is whatever suits my fancy. Life is too short, have fun.
