I have a question about the crocheted rag rugs...Do ya'll think it's possible to knit a rug instead of crochet? Try as I might I can not get the hang of crochet. I have knit several sweaters etc but even Mary Jane's clear instructions can not stop me from getting the crochet too tight ...short of using a 2x4 to get the tension right!! I thought maybe garter stitch..what do you think? Thanks, Angela |

Angela, Have you ever tried making a toothbrush rug? Much easier I think than crocheting. Here is a website to read about them. www.auntphillys.com I finally finished mine. I'll have to take a photo sometime and post it. Denise

Hmmm...I have only crocheted them, but it is always worth a try I guess. You can use the braided method as well.

Toothbrush rugs are cool! They are much denser,(I don't know if that's the right word, fabric is much closer together?) than crochet. And they're easy. One caution tho -- they take a TON of fabric. |

I went to that site. Are there any sites that have actual directions on how to do them?? Wish I'd have thought to put stuff like that in my Hope Chest...lol

Ladies , I am pleased to announce it not only worked ...it is gorgeous! I wish i knew how to place pics on here/ going to a reunion in Tenn in the morning but I'll try to get hubby aka "Bear" to help me post some pictures. I won't say it was the most graceful knitting I've ever done ... all those strings and knots but I knitted them right in (looks kinda like bows I tied in it sticking up!!) Anyway , will do my best to show you what I made. By the way I believe that toothbrush rug project will be next. I don't think the rug I created will be acceptable for the type of "rug abuse" mine are subjected to LOL, Be Back tomarrow, Angela |

Hey ladies, I went on ask.com and found this. It is directions and pictures of how to do toothbrush rug and how to make hook as well. Here is the address http://thelibrary.springfield.missouri.org/lochist/periodicals.bittersweet/sp8lg.htms Good grief, I better go double check that one. It had great directions. Wish my goofy printer would work and I would print it ouot. Carol Sue

Now I know what I want to do, have lots of fabric and this looks better than trying to figure out how to crochet which I have never done but would like to learn. Carol Sue

Teresa, Thanks for the instructions. I'm hoping to work on some with my daughters this summer, after I've sorted through the fabric stash.

CRsHelpmeet, I have the directions for making one. Maybe you can try it out sometime. They don't put the directions on that website because they want you to buy the stuff from them.

Teresa - those instructions are interesting. I have never seen one where you work off of a braid as your center core. I have directins that came with my tool that you just work around a strip of fabric. I'll have to try yours.
Kristine - I see you live in Bonney Lake. I was just there - I make a special trip from Elma to go to Ben Franklin for fabric. I got hooked when I lived in Enumclaw now I can't give it up! |

Nope, she doesn't have a big lavender farm yet, she 3 different kinds of lavender plants that she is checking out in her backyard t see how they do here. Had 4 lost 1 due to cats thinking that that was a great place to use for a bathroom. Gross out!!! I can't wait to see her's bloom this year to see what they did. Carol Sue Teresa's Mom
