Dear NEW Friends, I am new to MaryJane's Farm, etc, but have been a farmgirl (100 chickens, cows, horse, pigs, etc) for many years. What a great group of farmgirls you are! I received my autographed MJF book last week, and have really enjoyed it. A friend came over on Tuesday, and I showed it to her. She was so excited, that I let her borrow it. Then, that night, I walked up to the garden, and found that the garlic was full of Scapes! Can anyone please share a recipe or two for garlic scapes? Who kn ows when I'll see my book again! |

Welcome, Kelly! Garlic scapes are very versatile. You can chop them up and add them to a salad, or toss them in with scrambled eggs, or add to soup or stew ... just about anything you would do with green onions or onions or garlic. I just love them! And they keep for a good while in a paper bag in the fridge. Enjoy! Judy

ANyone know when the garlic will be in season on the sight here? I tried to order some hardneck a while back and it was sold out. Now it is out of season.

DH planted about 5000 garlics about 3 yrs ago. I have been ripping them out and tossing them.... I guess this year we will try to eat them. I guess I could stuff a chicken with them.

Hi Everyone!
I heard back from MaryJane today. MaryJane says her garlic crops (both seed and edible) are still in the ground but growing like a rowdy bunch of buckaroos. (The rains have shown up with perfect timing this spring!) Everyone at the farm (including B&B guests) are all eating lots of her green garlic (like eating scallions) but her "cured" bulb garlic (suitable for shipping) won't be ready until the end of July. But for us local customers, her garlic scapes will be ready in about three weeks.
Thanks!

LOL! You aren't the only one! I am excited to! I can't wait to order some for us. I just _know_ her garlic is going to be _so_ much better than the stuff I can get in the store.

Gasp. Elizabeth, you tore them out? :) War of the garlic roses? Sounds like a funny story there, if you'll tell it.

Yum! Thanks Libbie for the link...what great information! I have garlic growing, but I have no idea what kind it is. Can you use the scapes from any garlic? Do all garlic varieties make scapes?

Thanks for the link, Libbie! Michelle, the garlic lady says in the link that only hard neck garlic produces scapes. Due to her help, we did plant three kinds--one hardneck--last fall, and it's the only one scapeing. Look closely to see if you have that curly stem in the center of your garlic.
