So I get this call this morning from Linda the postmaster at my local post office (which I am no longer shipping from) Theyt have six of my pacakges, some were sent last week and some were send weeks ago. They had been stolen! By who they don't know, not a carrier though. She tells me she cannot release them, not because of me or what's in them, but because they need them!

I have never ehard of such a stupid thing. It turns out I am not the only one though. My neighbors down the road were missing incoming mail and packages and my neighbor Mike, the dairy farmer to our North, was missing some major mail!

HA! had we a late bill this would be an actual valid excuse!!

So I am shipping from the Pine River office now instead of our local and closer office. Oy. I have three more emails to send on etsy. better get at it.

That is Crazy! I don't see how it is LEGAL for them to hold them! That makes no sense! Hope it all works out!

The only thing I can gather is that they need to hold them as evidence....but if they ahve processed everything....who knows. I have the copy of the police report and should they find out who did it, will have to go to court! The headaches that ensue when people break the law.

I know what they are and who they were going to, so at least I can get word to people who have been waiting for their mail, you know.

It is funny. Don't worry Kathie. it is funny.

Hey Tasha,
I hear ya, we had mail stolen from our mailbox about 10 years ago. Started getting nasty grams from some utilities & our car loan,,,I had to put stop payments on about 8 checks, & send out letters to them as well as pay late fees!. I had no idea what had happened until about 6 months later when I received a large manila envelope from the Supeior Court, with all my mail!!!! it had been held as evidence in a trial against a young couple who had been going through neighborhoods stealing mail outta mailboxes. I gave the clerk a large piece of my mind letting them know the grief they caused my by not letting me know that they had my mail. I also sent copies of the court letter to the 8 companies in hopes that they would recind the late fees! NOT! Thank goodness it didn't mess up my credit. That was 10 years ago, & now mail theft is geting worse.
Tasha, I hope they get your packages to ya real soon. Will they let you know at least wh the recipients are?

That's weird. So how/where did they find all the packages? Were they still wrapped for shipment?

You are so lucky the packages were found! Hopefully they won't need to keep them for two long! *hugs*

I just heard on the local news that a mail carrier had burried mail in her yard for about 4-5 years! They are digging it up as we speak. Tasha, I am sorry for all your troubles.

This isn't mail-related, but it might explain why you weren't notified of the missing packages.

Several years ago, my car was stolen while I was out shopping. Several weeks later, I received a letter from the police station, a kind of "just touching base" on the status of our case. The letter mentioned that my car had been in their impound yard since 4 days after it was stolen! I called the detective and asked what was going on, and he explained that an undercover officer had purchased my car from the suspected thief. I wanted to know why they didn't tell me they had my car, and the detective quite apologetically explained that they had to investigate EVERYONE, us included! The police didn't want to risk tipping him that he was dealing with undercover agents, and if we by chance knew him (or he knew of us) and he saw we had our car back, that is exactly what would have happened.

We got our car back after the police determined that neither we nor the thief knew each other.

I think it is thier court evidence. As crazy as that may be, here you have to show id for same reason to pick up your parcel which is crazy too as everyone knows everyone(very small town). But it prevents others from picking up your stuff.

yeah i am pretty sure its evidence. I wasnt told where they found it or how, but I was given the names of the recipients so that I could send out new pacakges. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. I was told by the postmaster that I should be receiving more infor via the mail (HA! LOL) from the police as well as the post office.

It's just strange how things like this happen.

I know that identity theft is always a big concern these days. I just can't imagine what people think when they steal packages and mail. Very odd and very sad in a way for the people who do things like this.

That's nuts. I don't think the post office can do that. Something has got to be a federal offense here. Sounds like you live in the same kind of crooked county that I do. Hope this all turns out best for you.

did ya'll get a form to fill out about your postal office recently? i sent a glowing report .. all three of our little town post offices have the most professional and friendly clerks. they should get a raise after all i said. i think this is a nation-wide survey.

i have had amazing good luck with the post office in all the years i have mailed dollies and treasures.

so sorry that you are having such a problem. it must be terribly frustrating. hope it all gets cleared up soon.

No, I didn't get a survey. Darn! I would love to commend my mail carrier! He is always super friendly and makes an effort to learn people's names. He noticed when my neighbors moved and hadn't forwarded their mail. Not all mail carriers will do that.
