Yesterday I made pot roast which is one of my favorite meals. On of my favorite things about pot roast is the oven roasted veggies that we put around the meat as it cooks. Not only do they get that fantastic roasted taste, but they get the beefy taste too. I usually put carrots, onions, garlic, peas, and celary around the meat.
Well, yesterday I realized I had a about 10 potatos that were sprouting and a bunch of carrots that need to be used up. I didn't have enough pan space for that many potatos so I made 3 extra dishes of the veggies and used beef base to make them taste like they were roasted with the meat. Yum!
So what is your favorite Sunday dinner?

Roast chicken with roasted veggies is my own favorite but the rest of the family would pick roast beef. I like it too. I sure enjoy a good grilled steak this time of year with a big green salad and garlic bread though.

I agree- It sounds like a lovely feast! I think I would get full halfway through though! My steak would have to be little itty bitty!

Favorite from Growing up... Roast beef... aka Prime rib. we just called it roast beef.
I usually do something a little more involved for Sunday dinners than throw some meat in a pan and stick it in the oven. We like homemade chicken and noodles. Basically I make some kind of bready type item. Too many carbs for the regular dinner during the week.

You guys have made me hungry!!
Our favorite is fried chicken, homemade mac and cheese, fresh bread, homemade applesauce and veggies. Usually I make brownies or apple pie with it. Not exactly a slimming meal, but on Sunday who cares?
Enjoy the day! |

~ Pork roast. ~ Roasted potatoes (the kind where you cut 'em up and toss 'em in a baggie with a tablespoon of veggie oil, a little bit of fresh-ground coarse pepper, kosher salt, fresh rosemary, and minced shallots.) ~ Steamed asparagus. ~ Steamed broccoli. ~ Rolls with butter. ~ Peach pie for dessert...warm, with vanilla ice cream.
Yum. ~ K

You guys are making me hungry. We have the same taste though, we like a pot roast, but in the summer we like a grilled steak. For Mother's Day my husband grilled rib eye's, roasted corn. I made loaded baked potato's, caramelized peppers and onions, a big green salad, and I made my stuffed mushrooms (my moms favorite). Sounds like we all are thinking alike! Basically anything we can have and enjoy time as a family. |

When our daughters come down to the beach, which is most weekends, if we don't cook on the grill they usually request fried chicken, chicken pastry, dixie lee peas(field peas) fresh garden peas, corn, deviled eggstomatoe&cucumber slices and maybe a sour cream lemon pound cake. We don't often eat this heavy but when we do we sure enjoy it! This pound cake is my mother in laws recipe. Sour Cream and Butter, little lemon flavoring. No shortening. It is fittin! |

Sauerbraten and spaezle would have to be my most favorite Sunday meal! She makes it with beef roast (it is originally a venison recipe) soaked several days in a vinegar/wine marinade then simmered and sour cream added to the gravy. Spaezle are basically home-made egg noodles. Mmmmmm....

I never cook for Sunday dinner, ever. A bunch of my friends from church always go out together and we never know what food we're going to eat, but it hardly matters because it is a meeting of our family, feels like more of a family than my genetic family.
Sometimes our group has potlucks after church. The one thing that goes fastest is the deviled eggs. The people who usually bring them put pickle juice in them, so they say, and they are very, very popular. Baked spaghetti, although simple, is enjoyed there, and sometimes we fire up the grill for a big group cookout.
The host of the potluck must have cherry pie with chocolate ice cream, so we indulge him. ;-)
We have a potluck during the week sometimes which is cool. I found a tuna noodle casserole with spinach that is really good, and sometimes I'll do pad thai which may not be standard but works well. We have a huge international market right down the street so all kinds of tasty treats are majorly cheap there.
That having been said, the guinness pot roast sounds really good. Hardly ever drink beer, but I like to cook with it...

I usually cook on Sunday, and it's a "bigger" fare than our normal dinners.
At least two sundays out of the month, we have parmesan sage crusted thick pork chops, sweet potatoes and corn on the cob with jalapeno butter, or some type of herb butter. I either bake the sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar and pecans, or slice them thin and fry them with cajun spices, s & p.
We alternate grilling too, on Sundays when it's real warm to make the kitchen less "stifling"...
I always make a dessert of some sort.

Yep, as in Guinness Stout. It's SOOO good. It tenderizes tough meat and gives the roast a deep, complex flavor but doesn't overly taste like beer.
It's super simple. I use a 3-4 pound roast with carrots, onions, potatoes and sometimes parsnips. Season with thyme, salt and pepper and pour a bottle of Guinness over everything. Add 2-4 cups of water as necessary to fill the crockpot halfway up the roast. Cook on low 5-7 hours. You can use 2 cups of broth to make a pretty tasty gravy if you like by thickening it with a roux on the stove.

I am going to make each one of your Sunday dinners (including the ones where you go out!) for the next few months. That will be a nice change of pace. This Sunday will be pot roast with Guinness from the recipe here. Then I will go for the Sauerbraten and spaezel. I will scan this thread for each one of my Sunday dinners. Guess I will have to make fried chicken on a Saturday next time. My son wants it once a week now, so it will have to be a weekday sometimes too. Looking forward to having dinner with you all! XXOO |

I am *SO* psyched to try that Guinness Pot Roast!! Boy, does that sound yummy. I'm not a "beer" gal myself - but like one of the other farmgirls said, I do enjoy cooking with it on occasion.
That Sunday Brunch after church sounds *wonderful*!!! What a great idea to get together regularly with people you enjoy. ~ K
