Just want to say that after going through all the different topics of discussion about what to use for "natural" cleaning, I am leaning so much from all of you. I'm new at this Farm Girl stuff, so reading about all the different uses of Borax, vinegar, baking soda, etc. it's just wonderful. Slowly, but surely, my hubby and I are getting back to the natural way of doing things with our new home - I've started my first compost pile, going to put in a garden next year, hopefully will get hubby to put up a clothes line for me this summer, saving all those small glass jars to make MJ's pin custions as gifts, recycling my hubbies pop cans for $$, making vintage style aprons from MJ's patterns, crocheting and braiding rag rugs, and using vinegar, Borax, baking soda and salt as cleaners. We have a well, so we have very hard water and I tried vinegar and WOW - all the water stains came off. I've made a thing to put into the dishwasher to help remove the hard water stains on the glasses, made the scouring stuff for the sinks, and have discovered a solution of water and liquid sofener to use on glass topped tables to repel the dust. I just want to say thank you for all the helpful hints and tips I've read from everyone. Getting back to a simplier life style is great and fun. And reading all of MJ's magazines and books has been a real big help and treat. I've turned on some other women to MJ's books, etc. They're hooked too. Have a wonderful day. Hi Annie-
Isn't it great to be able to get together and pool all of our experiences like this? It is like getting together with a group of friends for tea and just chatting away! I really like hearing about people's practical experiences with the green cleaning solutions. That way I learn if they really work before investing money in a different way of doing things.
So what is the solution of water and liquid softener that you use on glass topped tables? What type of softener is it?

I'm here to agree with you 100%!! I have learned *SO* much from the women here. And I've also come to believe that "New & Improved" isn't necessarily either. Things supposed designed to make life "...easier..." on us are proving to be more difficult and costly to the generations coming after us. That certainly isn't a legacy I want to leave my loved ones. ~ K

Hay Annie, I am curiuos to know about cleaning the hard water stains. I am using a commercial cleaner that is so toxic I have to wear a mask to clean the bathroom! We have very hard water from our well, any help would be much appreciated!

Alee, the proportions of the anti-dust spray is 4 parts water to one part liquid sofener. I just pour it into a spray bottle and then with a clean rag I spray the glass and wipe around and then wipe it down with another rag. Can tell you right now that it cleaned better than Windex and with no streaks. As far as what I use, I get an eco-friendly brand from the local health food store. But I'm sure any one would work - I just like using "green" products whenever I can.
Have also browsed the Internet on "green" cleaning products and there's a lot of info out there. I've eliminated using those plug in air fresheners - my sinuses were going bonkers! What a difference. Have found a natural way of freshening the air inside the house.
And going natural and green is sure a lot less expensive than the fancy store brands. Plus I think you get a lot more for your money when you use natural products.

Angie, I just poured some vinegar onto a clean, white rag, rubbed down the water spots and then wiped off with another clean rag. I did this on the outside patio doors that had gotten water spots on them from the sprinkler. The spots had been on the doors for about a week. Tried Windex and that did nothing at all. So tried the vinegar and what a difference. No more spots! I also used the same system on the shower door and the inside and again no more spots. I've also read that you can put some vinegar and water into a spray bottle and use it that way. For really stubburn water spots, they say to spray the solution on and wait 10 - 15 min. and then wipe down. The vinegar smell doesn't stick around.
Having a well is wonderfull for the great tasting water, but the hardness is something else.

I guess I am confused about the softener. Are you talking about fabric softener or a water softener/conditioner?

Alee, it's fabric softener and water. I just poured a cup of water into a spray bottle and then poured in 1/4 cup of fabric softener. So far it seems to be working - no dust on my glass coffee table. And with two dogs running around the house, the dust really likes to accummulate on that one piece of furniture.

Thanks for the clarification Annie :) I know what you mean about the dogs :) Anything that helps control dog hair is always a bonus, right?
