I need help from experienced crocheters (is that a word?). I'm practicing and having the same problem I've always had -- don't know what to do when I get to the end of the row. I'm never sure which stich to use for the last one on the row. Then my piece starts to end up sideways, getting smaller, etc.
Also, after you make the chain and you're doing the foundation row what kind of stich do you use? A single crochet?? The stitching book doesn't make that clear. Also when you do a double crochet do you start the row in the 2nd chain from the hook or do you go over further?
This is supposed to be relaxing but my stomach hurts!
I had the same problem when I learned to do that over 40 years ago. If you are single crocheting. you chain 1 single crochet , turn and go into the first single that is closest to the hook. The same if you are double crocheting. Chain 3 or I think it's 2. turn the work and do the first double crochet closest to the hook. Also, a good beggincers book will help you to see the sitiches.You might want to check at your local library Most of them have viedos of learning things like knitting and crocheting. ok if doing single crochet or half dpouble crochet you ignore the turning chain and crochet in to the last stitch of the last row which will be the base of the first stitch of the current row.
Once you get to double crochet your turn chain is your first stitch so you double crochet into the second to last stitch on the last row. Making your second stitch on the current row as your turning chain counts as the first stitch I hope that made since.
Okay let me see if I have this. If I'm doing single crochet at the end of the row I chain one. Then start the new row in the first chain of the row? Double crochet -- at the end of the row I chain two and start the new row in the 2nd chain of the row?

nope single crochet = chain 1 turn sigle crochet in top of last single crochet skip chain all together ignore it in other words.
dc = depends on book can be a chain 2 or chain 3 I usually use a chain three but either works. Make your chain turn skip work skip those chain and skip the last dc on the previous row so you are double crocheting into the second to last double crochet of the previous row.
If we are discussing the starting chain that is a little different you didn't say which you where doing
so if this is the case on single crochet skip on chain and single crochet in the second chain from the hook so do not count what is on the hook and don't count the chain you just made single crochet into the next stitch
if doing double crochet of the starting chain depends on your pattern you are either double crocheting in the third chain from your hook or the four and all the ones you skipped count as a double crochet so the first double crochet is actually a row of chains and the second one is actually the first double crochet that looks like a double crochet.
I'm throughly confused! I'm a visual person so reading how to do things does not work well for me. It will be easier if I go to a yarn shop and have someone show me. Thanks for trying to help -- I'm just not catching on.
