Okay, the Buy Nothing Summer blog has been created:
http://buynothingsummer.blogspot.com
If you want to sign up, send me an email either through the MJF site here or directly to yogurtandgranola AT gmail DOT com and I'll send you an invitation to be a blog author.
There are no strict "rules" for everyone to follow. Each participant will sign up with their own set of rules that fits his or her unique situation. So, yes, money for the Harry Potter book is perfectly acceptable! It's just an exercise to get us to explore our spending habits and cut back for a period of time to catch our collective breath.
The blog is a way for us to encourage and inspire each other to stick with it!

I'm in - I actually read a book about a writer in the east somewhere who did this for a year. Pretty interesting. |

I heard about that writer on NPR and it's stuck in my head ever since. I think she lived in NYC of all places! If she can do it there for a year, I can certainly do it here for one summer!
mom2knk, mikesgirl and deniselantz...got all three of you and have sent invitations. Fun!

We did this for an entire year when my husband got laid off from his job in 1999. It can be done! We paid off all our debts with his severence check and saved money by:
1. not eating out at all- we ate the food storage we had built up 2. discontinued cable-we watched videos we already had 3. no payed entertainment- played family board games (lots of cards), baked together, took walks, went to dairy farms to watch cows being milked, talked to neighbors, enjoyed life. 4. didn't buy gifts- I stamped handmade cards and made homemade gifts from crafts stuff I already owned for holidays for family and friends. 5. didn't buy clothing- asked for hand-me-downs from family and friends and used that. 6. didn't pay for haircuts- had a hair trimmer, so husband started zipping the guys hair and I trimmed my bangs and let my hair grow long. 7. instead of buying new furniture (we thought we needed)- we sewed (ok...my husband sewed) our own sofa cushions, pillows, curtains with fabric we got on sale at a big discount day one year for $60 and husband sanded the old coffee table and varnished it for a brand new look. 8. saved money on other groceries- we picked veggies in my Pop's garden to eat. 9. saved gas- by only going to one store for almost everything twice per month(yes....Walmart)...and when husband was job hunting-he'd make sure to make any stops on the way home to save on making another trip out. 10. never bought scrapbook supplies (I scrapbook)...instead- I got a job at the scrapbook store teaching classes and any store credit went towards scrapbook stuff I wanted. I didn't even print photos for a year...that was a tough one for me.
We used it up, wore it out and make good use of everything! We gained some respect for a simpler life and reconnected with each member of the family. We prayed. We counted our blessings, We humbled ourselves. We actually are thankful for that 'Season' in our lives.

I have sent my email also. I just love this and thanks for doing it. There are some great ways to get around the way we all spend to much on things we do not need. We have never had cable here. I check out movies from the library and books too. I only purchase clothes on sales and then they are what my kids call the geranimal collection. Just about everything goes with everything and are stlyes that do not go out of fashion. If I want something special I make it or wear new jewelry I have made. We eat locally. I enjoy my farm so I do not feel the need to spend time in town where just about the only thing you can do is eat out of shop. I am very excited about this program but I would say that if you find the need to purchase something make sure it is from one of the talented ladies here at MaryJane or those of use on etsy. We still have to make a living but at least you will be supporting those of us who share your loves, passions and secret desires. Good Luck Everyone.

What a great idea! I will have to consider trying this. I am not sure how "on board" fiance will be, but seeing as how he signs his checks over to me... ;) |

Wow! With so many cool Farmgirls signing up and posting to the Buy Nothing Summer blog (http://buynothingsummer.blogspot.com), this is turning out to be one cool, cool summer project. It's not just for Farmgirls though, invite your other friends and family members too. My husband, Dan, made his first blog post (ever!) to this blog this weekend and is really enjoying it.
(Send an email to yogurtandgranola AT gmail DOT com to sign up for the blog!)

Just sent you an email, Catherine. Please include me! I will still actively buy antiques, as that is my business and method of helping support our family, but I will not buy for myself or home. The best thing for me is to avoid the mall and when I do need to go to Walmart, have a set list beforehand that I do not allow myself to waiver from. Thanks for the push!

Hey all!
Just a quick note: if you've sent me an email to sign up for the Buy Nothing Summer blog, then I sent you an invitation to be a blog author and you need to check your email. There's a bit of confusion on that one, but just check your email, accept the invitation and poof! you're a blog author.
Please note: Since there are NO specific rules for this Buy Nothing Summer, you certainly DON'T HAVE to be a blog author to be a Buy Nothing Summer Camper. However you want to participate is great. Whether you post essays, lists, articles or comment on other people's posts...it's all good. No pressure whatsoever!!
Happy time buying nothing!!!

I've been trying to get on your blog but everytime I try, my google id and password won't work. I even tried signing up all over again, but no luck. I'm stumped. I can get onto other blogs. |
