Okay nearly 60 yrs old, good health, active and working but the knees are bad. Doctor did an MRI and not a lot of cushioning left but some. I'm not ready for a replacement, so...

What arthritis medicine do you use? Which works the best for you? Do you do anything else such as heating pad? ice? soak in warm water? Does exercise hurt or help? Shoes? Pain meds?

I have taken different drugs in the past, loved the ones they took off the market, now taking Arthrotec, it's okay, not great. Hurts to do treadmill, and the cold swimming pool water makes it worse, soak in bathtub warm water, heating pad, can't wear heels, and do Motrin. I've had the injections also with not great success. I need some new ideas. Any fellow suffers?

Hi Mollie! I'm a fellow sufferer. Not sure if I have arthritis but my knees sure do hurt. Not all the time -- just when I'm walking alot, etc. Use that for my excuse not to walk - LOL! I really don't do anything for mine except take Advil when I need to. Probably should take something on a regular basis so I'm not in pain but I forget to. Guess I've had the pain for so long I've kind of gotten used to it. I've never talked to the drs about my knees because they haven't been real bad until this alst year. But I have a physical in June so will be discussing it then.

I'm so sorry that you hurt so badly. My poor daddy suffered for years with bad knees. We tried to talk him into replacement surgery and he wouldn't hear of it. It finally got so bad that he was bow-legged and could hardly walk. The doctor told him he'd be in a wheelchair soon if he didn't have both knees done. That did it and dad went to the hospital. When he came out of surgery he told me that if he knew he'd be pain free he'd have done this years ago. He had been living in so much pain that the pain from the surgery wasn't anything to him! He didn't even take pain meds after the surgery. The point is -- if the doctor says have surgery then go for it.

I have arthritis in one knee and a bone chip in the other from an injury last year. When my knees hurt I do use a heating pad..that seems to help quite a bit. For some reason Ibuprofen dosn't help me at all so I don't use it. Excedrin was working a bit but the caffeine wasn't great for my high blood pressure so I am taking Daypro now (just started this week) it has helped more than the excedrin did so that is great. My dad had both knees replaced in his 40's and so did his brother. My own brother and sister both have bad knees too. Jeesh! Mine have only gotten real bad in the past couple years..especially in the last year since I fell on them both hard last spring. I am trying to NOT have the steriod shots in my knees (chicken) for now.
I hope you find something that helps alot!

Here's an article that I just wrote for Herbal Momma Newsletter

"My Oh My, that knee is swollen & hurt so bad I couldn’t sleep. Can you relate? This might help for you, whether it's your knees or shoulders.

I just went to an Orthopedic Surgeon and sure enough I need a knee replacement because of Degenerative trauma induced Arthritis, as soon as the pain is too much for me to handle. But this kind doctor gave a list of supplements that naturally reduce inflammation. I am too young (47) for knee replacement and really not keen on surgery. I was able to adapt it and soon found, within a few of days, pain relief. My pain level went down to NO pain and the swelling so greatly reduced I can even see my kneecap. Now I am working out in the garden for a few hours at a time with little to no pain and only minimal swelling.

So here is what I take daily:
6 Omega 3 Fish Oil capsules, 1000 mg
2 Vitamin C tablets, 1000 mg
Glucosamine Hydrochloride 1500 mg
Chondroitin Sulfate 1200 mg
Manganese 10 mg

Morning Smoothie
1 cup kefir or yogurt (I have kefir going all the time)
1 scoop whey protein
12 drops stevia liquid
¾ cup frozen raspberry
¼ cup frozen blueberry
2 plus teaspoons beef gelatin
1 teaspoon spirulina powder
¼ teaspoon local bee pollen

Along with smoothie I eat:
1 tablespoon coconut oil on homemade whole wheat toast

I also use the affirmations, “I am physically active and enjoy full movement of my body”. I think “momentum” and keep moving physically, and have more variety of activities in my day.

I have noticed that if I go more that one day without supplements and smoothie I start to hurt again. This is a regime that is easy to stay on because the blessing that pain relief provides."

I have been taking all those supplements except the fish oil. I will get some today. I like the idea of doing things in the most natural way possible. I like the daily affirmation thing too...I tend to tell myself things that sound less nice..like "I am healthy as a horse..I can do this..keep moving" I think yours sounds nicer.
I love smoothies..may have to try that too!

I've had a painful knee since I tore the cartilage 11 years ago and had surgery to "clean it up". It hurts most when the weather is changing. In addition to some of the above, I take a supplement that contains turmeric. Studies have shown it to be helpful. Hard to tell, my pain varies so much I can't really correlate it to forgetting to take my supplements. When it is really bad and my back and other previously broken bones hurt too, I take Aleve.

Farmgals,
I spent another 6 plus hours working outside in the garden & yard and admiring God's handiwork. We were having spring rain storms blowing through & it was all wonderful. But most of all I can do it without any pain, then or tonight, nor tomorrow. I am so grateful that my 47 year old body, without any cartlidge on the right knee (as of the last x-ray) doesn't hurt, nor swell. I don't even feel the weather changes in my knee like I did a few months ago. It truly is a miracle! Everyday I am amazed and grateful for this healing in my life. And I will keep taking suppliments, smoothie, being grateful & using affirmations because my life is so different, no, better!

I have had two knee surgeries and my kneecaps are continuing to chip apart. Needless to say, my knees hurt REALLY badly most of the time. I usually use muscle rub and the absolute BEST stuff is called "Biofreeze." I get it through work (we provide it to our factory employees if they need it.) It's certainly not natural, certainly not organic, but it makes me go "ahhhhhhh" when I slather it on and my knees get some relief. It can only be purchased through medical supply companies or through physical therapists/doctors - that's the downside.

No arthritis yet, but 40 and 3 ACL on the same knee... and in the next 10 - 15 yrs I will need a new knee. Exercise or just keep moving or you will start to rust. No high impact, but walking or riding a bike is great.

What helps a lot are good shoes. My favorites are Naots, Dansko's & Crocs. Get the real ones they may cost a bit more, but they will outlast the copy cat versions.

I agree with getting the real crocs..I was wearing some fake ones and got real ones (traded Katiedid some birks that were too narrow for HER crocs that were too wide) and LOVE them..huge difference! I feel the same way about real and fake birks.

Well my knees are sure hurting tonight. I was down scrubbing floors today and it about did me in. I went into town tonight to go to Joann's and was limping so bad I didn't think I was going to make is across the parking lot. I came home and took two Tylenol which have taking the edge off. Maybe I'll try some heat.

Hey, gals! Have any of you ever heard of the home remedy of grape juice with a spoon of liquid pectin mixed in? A friend who suffers from arthritis in the knee joints saw it in a doctor's column in the newspaper, tried it, and swears by it! A glass of grape juice with a spoon of the pectin mixed in, once a day. May be something to experiment with for a month and see if you notice any relief. I know when I get to that point I am going to try it! Nance

Real Crocs...rock!

My hubs has had two knee surgeries and swears by Cosamin DS. His physician recommended it and signed a form so we can purchase it on our MSA. When we were out briefly he definitely noticed the difference, and quickly returned to lack of complaint when he started back on it. Supposedly it has been clinically tested for efficacy, if I remember correctly, and others apparently have not. Some of those supplements do have shellfish components so check carefully if you are allergic.

Have you been to the chiropractor? This really helped my dd. Also Birkenstocks or wearing good shoes.

I have arthritis in my back, as well as Crohn's Disease, and started taking Glucosamine Condroitin blend, along with Omega 3 (fish oil) for the Crohn's. Back pain is down a lot now as well. Both supplements are anti-inflammatory, and can work for more than just bone and joint pain, depending on the person and on the condition. Have not had severe abdominal pain since starting them either.

I don't have knee pain, except when gardening on them for too long. Have had back surgery since 26, now 50. You all have given great information on here for me to try. Thank you. Carol Sue

Well, I think that you all might try getting adjusted by a chiropractor. Your spine may be "out of whack" causing unnecessary pressure on your knees and other joints. Realigning your spine could take that pressure off your knees and relieve your joints. It definately worth a try...it helped my knee that I hurt playing tennis.

Teaching is 1/4 planning and 3/4 theater!

I tore the cartilage & ligament in my right knee years ago. The way I found to keep my knee strong & limber was to exercise everyday & take long walks. I have been able to avoid surgery with this routine for the past 20 years! As I get a bit older now, I find taking fish oil (Omega 3) supplements 3 times a day does absolute wonders for my joints. For an experiment I quit taking the fish oil for a month & was amazed at how much I stiffened up. Needless to say I got right back on it & I feel great again.

How much fish oil is everyone taking? I've been using Nordic Naturals for a while now, am one my 4th bottle. I was taking one ts, I use the liquid but I have increased it to 2 ts now. I like the liquid. My son also takes it, the youth one, he is now taking 4 gel caps and he is also taking a zinc/mag chewable for his LD.

When I tore my cartlige and legiments after a few years of swellin and knee giving out I insisted they send me to a specialist and he did a scope. During the procedure he filled it with cotazone. It never gave me any trouble for almost 20years. It has started again recently. I hope that helps you.

I notice the knee pain more if I'm in an air-conditioned room, now that the weather is warmer. Yesterday I was pitting tart cherries and I drank a large glass of the strained juice, I noticed later that my knee wasn't hurting! I've read that tart cherry juice is an anti-inflammatory.
