We have newly purchased a house on 20 acres. I'm new to the farm scene. Are there any helpful books out there about self-sufficent living, Farm-life, etc. out there? Any ideas? What do you know about septic systems? What cleaning/laundry products can I use safely for my septic system?

Erin,
Welcome!!! So glad to have you! I hope if you get a chance you can pop over to the welcome wagon and introduce yourself so we can all get a chance to say hello!

As for helpful books I have a few favorites. The best comprehensive one in mho is The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Emery. I also love Back to Basics by RD and the RD Home Handbooks Organic Gardening is good as well as 1001 Hints And Tips for Your Garden. If you check old post in the section "reading room" here I believe there is a thread on best books for country gals and everyone posted their favorite books for farm/country/garden advice. I do so hope this helps!! And once again WELCOME!!
Hugz!

Welcome! I would suggest "Country Wisdom & Know How" by the Editors at Storey, "The New Organic Grower" by Eliot Coleman, "Hobby Farms" by the Editors of Hobby Farm magazine and "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew.

Oh, and ask lots of questions and your hands dirty. Those are some of the best teachers.

Hi Erin!

The only think I know about Septic systems is that they do great with a monthly does of good bacteria. Most grocery stores sell this type of bacteria in the cleaning aisle. Congrats on buying 20 acres and welcome to MaryJanesFarm!

Hi, there, Erin - and congratulations on your new farm!!! YAY!!! There are so many good books out there about farms and farming - the ones that everyone has mentioned are great - I'd like to add "You Can Farm" by Joel Salatin and the "New Organic Grower" by Eliot Coleman.

'Can't wait to get to know you better! Be sure to jump on over to the Welcome Wagon forum and introduce yourself so we can all give you a proper farmgirl welcome...

XOXO, Libbie

I love all the books recomended above. Another helpful one I have is called Country Women I will have to look and see the author's name..can't remember off hand. It is out of print and you can find it on Amazon.com usually.
